In the first of two programmes on the parables of Jesus, Sean Fletcher meets Christians inspired by one of the most famous of Jesus’ stories – the Good Samaritan.

To begin his exploration of Jesus’ parables, Sean Fletcher visits priest and theologian the Rev Dr Rachel Mann at Bolton Parish Church. Rachel explains why Jesus used stories so prolifically in his teaching and shares her insights into the parable of the Good Samaritan, discussing how the themes of the story transcend human history and bring its message into our 21st-century society.

Next, Sean visits Jane and her husband Andrew, who are putting Jesus’ teachings into action. For the past 15 years, the couple have opened their home to dozens of short- and long-term house guests, including political and religious refugees, and international students. Jane explains to Sean how welcoming strangers is their way of living out Jesus’ call to love one’s neighbour.

Finally, we meet a man for whom an enemy became a friend. Paul Dayes found his faith later in life, following years of mistrust in the police and struggles with addiction. The Teen Challenge programme turned Paul’s life around and is where he met Leroy, a superintendent in the Metropolitan police. Paul and Leroy became firm friends, and Paul discusses overcoming prejudices and how the Good Samaritan mirrors their own story.

With hymns that celebrate the compassion of God and the challenge to love our neighbours.
