The story of Mo Salah’s unlikely rise to global stardom – how the Liverpool icon defied the odds and never gave up on his challenging journey to the top.
The story of Mo Salah’s unlikely rise to global stardom. This documentary explores how the Liverpool icon defied the odds and never gave up throughout his challenging journey to the top. How did a young boy from a tiny Egyptian village go on to win two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the hearts of millions of fans worldwide?
Salah’s journey is one of dedication, determination and pure devotion to the beautiful game, and for him, failure simply wasn’t an option. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool legends Luis Diaz, James Milner and Adam Lallana explain what really makes the man behind all the goals, records and trophies tick, whilst fellow Egyptian footballers Sarah Essam and Ahmed Elmohamady explore the extent of Salah’s status as a cultural and religious role model in his home country.
Rewinding to his early years in Egypt, youth coaches and old teammates bring to life the magic of Salah’s early spark and the challenges he faced trying to make it, from his gruelling five-hour bus journeys, to training, to how a national tragedy almost stalled his career. His early years in Europe proved no less formative, allowing Mark Schwarzer, Micah Richards and respected journalists to delve into his difficult spell with Mourinho’s Chelsea and his subsequent reinvention in Italy.
After an incredible first season with Liverpool, Salah’s unwavering grit was tested to its limit after Sergio Ramos’s tackle in the 2018 Champions League final left him with a dislocated shoulder. Ahmed Elmohamady recalls the lows of an injured Salah at Egypt’s World Cup in 2018, whilst Klopp and his Liverpool teammates relive both his, and the club’s, road to redemption in the 2019 Champions League final.
A local imam, Liverpool fans and Essam share the importance of Salah’s faith, how this has changed the perceptions of Muslims locally and what he means to Muslims worldwide. His legacy has flourished far beyond the football pitch. His openness and visibility as one of the most high-profile Muslim sportspeople in the world has helped unify communities and inspire generations.
Making hard work a lifestyle, setbacks his fuel and faith his driving force, to never give up is the only way for Mo Salah.
