Richard Burton: His Words
Rebecca Evans champions the spoken and written words of Richard Burton and the literary ambitions of Pontrhydyfen's favourite son.
We know that Richard Burton was arguably Wales' most gifted actor, conquering stage and screen. We also know he had a rollercoaster love affair with Liz Taylor. But we may not know that this proud Welshman had another lifelong passion - to become a writer.
Soprano Rebecca Evans returns to her home village of Pontrhydyfen, where - 100 years ago – Richard Burton was also born. With fellow villagers, Rebecca reminisces about meeting this local legend at the height of his fame. Rebecca then explores the treasures within Swansea University's Burton Archive.
Rob Brydon talks about how his own career was influenced by a Hollywood superstar having grown up mere miles away; Dame Sian Phillips remembers meeting him at the start of her own acting journey; and Professor Daniel Williams discusses Burton's literary ambitions - and that burning desire to give up acting to become a writer.
