Remembrance Sunday

Aled Jones marks Remembrance Sunday in Aldershot Garrison, known as the home of the British Army, to hear stories of faith, courage and thanksgiving.

Aled Jones visits Aldershot Garrison, known as the home of the British Army, to mark Remembrance Sunday and to hear stories of faith, courage and thanksgiving.

At the Cathedral Church of St Michael and St George, the Roman Catholic cathedral for the Bishopric of the Forces, Aled meets Colonel Dave Kenny, an army leader with over 30 years of service. Together, they explore the cathedral’s meaning as a sanctuary for soldiers and families, and discuss how Remembrance honours both those lost in conflict and those still affected after returning home.

Next, Aled meets Sergeant Navin Rai, a member of the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment. For Sergeant Rai, faith in Jesus guides him as a member of the armed forces and brings extra meaning to Remembrance Sunday as he reflects on the 19,000 Gurkha lives lost across the history of the British Army.

Aled also speaks with former Lance Corporal Peniasi Namarua, who reflects on the tragic attack in Afghanistan that killed five of his colleagues and left him with life-changing injuries.

Finally, at Aldershot Military Cemetery – home to over 800 Commonwealth War Graves and thousands of graves of fallen soldiers – Aled meets members of the local civilian community behind the annual Lighting the Graves service.

With hymns specially chosen for Remembrance Sunday, including a beautiful new recording of Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep from Libera:

1. O God, Our Help in Ages Past – St Macartin's Cathedral, Enniskillen
2. O Brother Man – The Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, Aldershot
3. All My Hope on God Is Founded – Crathie Kirk, Ballater
4. Bring Him Home – John Owen Jones in Brecon Cathedral
5. Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep – Libera in Edward King Chapel, Ripon College Cuddesdon
6. For the Healing of the Nations – St Martin-in-the-Fields, London
