The Mikado

Sara Mohr-Pietsch traces a path to the Overture from Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera The Mikado.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch traces a path to the Overture from Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera The Mikado. Along the way, Sara explores the role of the overture in opera, we hear works by Debussy and Puccini which - like The Mikado - were inspired by Japan, and music by other composers which portrays two of the operetta's plot themes: a wedding and an execution.

Part of Radio 3’s celebration of conductor Charles Mackerras’ centenary on 17th November.
