Pipe Band Special
Gary West turns his attention to the pipe band world to help celebrate the return of the first major band competition in Scotland since 2019 to be held in Greenock on May 21st.
With just one week to go before the first major pipe band contest for almost three years, Gary West celebrates their return with a reminder of some of the great band sounds of the past. The industrial communities of the central belt of Scotland are well represented with sets from Dysart and Dundonald, Polkemmet Colliery and the eight-times world champions through the 1950s and 60s, based in a Grangemouth paper mill, Muirhead and Sons. Canadian bands the 78th Fraser Highlanders and the Dowco Triumph Street go through their musical paces too, and there’s a stop off in Melbourne, Australia, for a set from the Victoria Police. Away from the pipe band scene, we dip into some classic recordings from Robert Mathieson, Yorkshireman John Walsh, and the Breton bagpipe and bass guitar duo of Patrick Molard and Alain Genty, while we bookend this week’s programme with two highly charged, full octane offerings from The Scott Wood Band and Rory Campbell & Malcolm Stitt.
