Charles Chilton - Journey Into Space Again

4 Extra Debut. Radio legend Charles Chilton and his cast recall 1953, when six million listeners were moon bound. With David Jacobs. From July 1999.

Part of BBC Radio 4 Extra's tribute to the remarkable talent of writer and producer Charles Chilton, who died on 2 January 2013 at the age of 95.

The mould-breaking series, written and produced by Charles Chilton between 1953 and 1958, transported six million radio listeners to the moon every Monday night.

"Operation Luna" was the first in his hit "Journey into Space" trilogy. With help from some of the original crew including David Jacobs and excerpts from their first mission, Chilton looks back at the last radio drama series to beat television in the ratings.

A Testbed Production for Radio 4 first broadcast in July 1999.
