Basketball coach Dan Haskins recruits a team of predominantly black players to play for his team, The Miners, in racially segregated and football-mad Texas. Overcoming the many challenges that face them, the team go on to amass victory after victory and eventually challenge favourites Kentucky in an unprecedented, rip-roaring game.
