John Rennie designed Lancashire's Grade I listed Lune Aqueduct in the late 1700s. It carries the Lancaster Canal over the River Lune. He used stone and cast iron to produce bridges with daringly wide arches. The Lancaster Canal is a contour canal - built along the natural lie of the land. It has 41 miles without locks, the longest such stretch in the country.
