Lorde brought a 1980s rush to the Live Lounge

The mighty pop queen Lorde, currently on a UK tour and after a storming Glastonbury performance, slipped into the Radio 1 Live Lounge and gave us all the chills, all the feels - and a whole lot more we can't quite describe.

Lorde's tracks are a popular pick for other artists to cover in the Live Lounge, having been given a go by everyone from Jason Derulo to All Time Low. "It makes me so happy, it’s a big deal," she said.

We're nearing the end of the epic musical voyage that is Live Lounge Month, celebrating 50 years of Radio 1, and it turns out we've been saving one of the very best names until almost last. Plus, it's always just so lovely hearing that chirpy New Zealand accent on the mic, right?

Read on to find out everything that went off when Lorde dropped by...

The current track: Green Light

Lorde's Green Light is a slice of euphoric power pop in its original state, but we swooned over her stripped back version in the Live Lounge. "I’m so happy that you exist, that was just beautiful," sighed Clara, echoing the thoughts of many.

The star said she was, "‘getting to the root of the emotional DNA" of the song, the way it was originally written.

The cover: In The Air Tonight

We thought we couldn't love Lorde any more. That is, of course, until she revealed that with fifty years of music to choose from she had decided to cover In The Air Tonight, Phil Collins' debut solo single. A stone cold early 1980s British pop classic, which Lorde has been performing live on her tour.

“He just is such a pioneer," Lorde gushed about Phil. "His melodies and his drums. I’m just so inspired by him and he pushes me to be better.”

The haunting eighties synths and Lorde's heartfelt, atmospheric vocals created an epic effect - and we were all waiting for that famous drum break, which sooooo didn't disappoint.
