Lauren Laverne's 5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 18 August
Every day we play you a track that has just landed on our laps. And as soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist, and other times it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's selection. Pinkyshinyultrablast – Find Your Saint
St. Petersburg’s dreamy five-piece Pinkshinyultrablast return with new single Find Your Saint. The purveyors of "thunder pop"/"kung-fu-gaze" (their own description) are channelling major 80s vibes and we’re feeling it, especially at the start of week. A new album will follow, but not until 2018.
Self-Esteem – Your Wife
Self-Esteem is the new solo project of Rebecca Taylor. She’s stepping away from Slow Club and this is the first creative offering. Django Django drummer Dave Maclean has produced the track, and the double dose of drummers has delivered some sultry percussive delights. The song questions the male dominated world Rebecca finds herself in, the boundaries and freedoms, and her own sexual limits within those boundaries. It’s out now digitally, on Kick & Clap.
Car Seat Headrest – War Is Coming (If You Want It)
Will Toledo’s song about “not murdering people” was released for just 24 hours, earlier this month, to raise money for the Transgender Law Center (an Oakland-based civil rights organization). And, against a background of social and political turmoil, it’s now released officially to the world. If you love Will, like we do here at 6 Music, he’s heading back to the UK for a few live dates at the end of the month.
LCD Soundsystem – tonite
James Murphy has called his band’s forthcoming album “one of the most enjoyable records to make in [his] life”, and tonite certainly brings that home. As the third single from their LP due next month, this funky new single is guaranteed to get you dancing. We’re glad to have them back, and it’s safe to say they’re returning in style, with a worldwide tour and 6 dates coming up in the UK.
Geowulf – Drink Too Much
Australia via London duo Geowulf say there’s a simple equation to Drink Too Much: “Bulk red wine + tired relationships = bad news baby.” Thankfully though, there’s nothing bad about this new track. It’s a dreamy beach pop number that sees vocalist Star and guitarist Toma remind us that summer is still just about here. With their first track released just last year, the hotly tipped pair are currently putting the finishing touches to their debut album. You can catch them at London’s Sebright Arms on 10th October.
