Desert Island Disco - November
Ice Dad's Funky Disco
24th November

Today’s Castaway is Graham Braid (AKA Ice Dad, so named by his daughter Hannah after the In Case Of Emergency entry in her phone). He lives on The Wirral.
He says: “I thought it about time that I threw my discs into the ring for Desert Island Disco, but with a funky twist, as I am basically a 'funkateer' at heart.
It all started with a pioneering DJ up here in Merseyside called Terry Lennaine, who used to play the most inspirational funk tunes. My friends and I enjoyed doing the ‘Wicky Wacky’ on the dance floors of the Top Rank in Liverpool, experiencing ‘Jungle Boogie’ blasted at us by Kool and the Gang at the Empire Theatre, and dancing around to James Browns ‘Get Up Offa That Thing’ on our holidays down in Cornwall, at the Sailors Arms and the Tall Trees Club in Newquay. Good days!
I have had the privilege of growing up in a golden era of music, from an early age listening to the glam rock of T.Rex, Roxy Music onto funk, or as my Dad used to call it "heavy soul", through to northern soul, disco, then ska, reggae and punk, with deviations into the electro sounds of Devo, and Kraftwerk and my favourite band Talking Heads.
I can honestly say I have experienced and love all types of music and that is why I am an avid listener to 6 Music and its smorgasbord of music. I find it refreshing that there is still a wealth of great funk out there, with the likes of New Cool Collective, Nils Langren, Smoove and Turrell, Brother Strut, Push and many more (on the list below). Even locally, in Liverpool, we have Galactic Funk Militia and Funkafonix keeping the funk alive. I hope you enjoy my list.”

Ed Garrie was part of the the club night collectiveBabble Collective Soundsystem which started in Leicester in 1993. Ed's DJ name was "Lobstafari" and he was a regular at Babble Collective Soundsystem's club nights. Ed has dedicated his Desert Island Disco to Babble Collective Soundsystem's 24th Birthday Party. The collective are celebrating their birthday on 18th November in Leicester.
The collective are dedicated to playing the funkiest house music for the nicest people around. It's an ever changing line-up of regulars - DJs, organizers, lighting designers and no less dedicated associates - lifting kit and handing out flyers. An early member of the group was Banksy who designed some of their flyers!
They've put on parties in some wonderful locations including a Babble bus party, a Babble boat party, street parties, warehouse parties, festival slots and the odd knees-up in a forest somewhere.
Ed says he has the fondest memories of partying with the Babble Collective Soundsystem - "I moved away from Leicester a few years ago, got married and now have a beautiful 2 year old daughter. Naturally, I have lost touch a little with the great friends and amazing people I used to lift PA with, paint canvas with, plug in lights for, play records to and get down with, but those times remain some of the happiest of my life, and Babble people some of the nicest folk I have ever met."
