5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 22 September

Every day we play you a track that has just landed on our laps. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, other times, it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's choice selection. Just hit the links to see the full Just Added playlist:

Lindstrøm - Tensions
We began the week with Scandi beats courtesy of Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, who’s just announced a fifth album, It’s Alright Between Us As It Is, which will be a continuous mix cut into nine tracks (classic Lindstrøm). The Norwegian producer has been described by the New Yorker as “the king of space disco” and this tune delivers interstellar electro-joy (rather than tension) for six plus minutes.

Blood Orange - BOWERYLDN EDIT 6 15 SEPTEMBER
The newest offering from Blood Orange - AKA Devonté ‘Dev’ Hynes - formerly of Test Icicles. Back in July, Dev revealed that he was busy working on the follow-up to his 2016 album Freetown Sound and, finally, something has materialised. It’s beautiful but melancholic (it references a horrific mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando) and this is only enhanced by the return of Jason Arce (who provided saxophone on the last LP).

Julia Jacklin - Cold Caller
Half of a AA-side single (the flip is Eastwick) this tune’s an ode to Jacklin’s older sister, which was inspired by her pregnancy. Jacklin explains: “On the first day she went into labour, I was checking my phone every 10 mins but managed to write the second part of the song. That night I had all these crazy nightmares…I woke up in an absolute state to the news that she had given birth to a healthy baby boy. I went into the studio and recorded this song. So this is for her, my wonderful sister Emma.”

Broncho – Get In My Car
Yes, this one’s not just out (it appeared in July) but it’s just joyful, and marks a very welcome return from the Oklahoma band. It’s unmistakably Broncho, with Ryan Lindsey’s distinctive vocals, jangly guitars, and a lovely bit of pop swagger. These dudes gained some much deserved attention when it was announced that they’d be supporting QOTSA in November.

James Holden & The Animal Spirits – Each Moment Like The First
We started the week with a disco banger and ended with something soothing from James Holden. It’s the second single from LP Animal Spirits (due November) and the product of his very first collaboration with drummer Tom Page. "What you hear is us making it up as we go along, playing melodies I hadn't written yet as they occurred to me, finding where the song wanted to go. And although we tried rerecording it later with more players and better mics, there was something untouchable about the truth of that first time."
