5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 8 September
Every day we play you a track that has just landed on our laps. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, other times, it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's choice selection. The Babe Rainbow - Peace, Blossom, Boogy
In case King Gizzard weren’t busy enough, putting out more albums than lights, frontman Stu Mackenzie has popped up as producer for this Byron Bay-based outfit. Two of the Babes - Jack and Angus - began song-writing whilst still at school. But the band was born when they met Venezuelan pianist Lu-Lu-Felix Domingo. Their album is out now, on Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records..
Cid Rim feat. Petite Noir - Swnerve
This standalone track is pronounced Swee-nerve and it sees Cid Rim (Cid like “Sid”, not a plain clothes detective) AKA Austrian producer Clemens Bacher team up with a former 6 Music session guest, Petite Noir. It’s a delightfully languid affair, which rhymes ghost with coast and post, and entreats you to remember that life is beautiful.
St Vincent – Los Ageless
This lovely bit of moody electro-pop arrived midweek and immediately grabbed our ears. It’s the second taste of St Vincent’s sixth album, which describes a winterless city that she can’t leave (despite a fair bit of running). Just after the track was released, St Vincent (AKA Annie Clark) announced that her next LP will be a first person opus called Masseducation. “You can’t fact-check it, but if you want to know about my life, listen to this record.”
Lamb - Illumina
This new Lamb track arrives ahead of a tour celebrating the 21st anniversary of their 1996 self-titled debut (that one, with Górecki on it…just how did it get so grown up?!) When Lou Rhodes and Andy Barlow headed into the studio to rehearse live interpretations of that classic LP, new material also emerged. And Lou says it was a beautifully collaborative thing: “Illumina was inspired by the way two people can see the same situation in very different ways and this difference, rather than being a point of conflict, brings a kind of illumination.”
Beck – Up All Night
You wait ages for new Beck and, then, you get two tracks in quick succession - welcome back Mr Hansen. If the last song (Dear Life) reminded us of Ben Folds Five, this funky number is getting us straight back on the dance floor. The video features a teenage superhero, with asthma, flying through a few parties in some medieval-inspired armour, to rescue a friend. Hell yes.
