Six new songs you need to know this week

12 March 2018

Another week, another batch of tracks to become obsessed with. Here are Radio 1's Tunes Of The Week, A.K.A. the songs your favourite DJs are hitting repeat on right now...

Blossoms - I Can't Stand It

This track has already been given the Annie Mac stamp of approval and received the Hottest Record In The World title, so you know that it's got to be a goodun.

I Can't Stand It is the debut single from Blossoms' upcoming second album, Cool Like You. It's been well over a year since we were first gifted new music from Stockport's finest and the band revealed to Annie that some of the tracks on the new album were penned before their debut made waves in the music world. Have they got a plan when it comes to maintaining those levels of success? Sort of...

"Longevity’s where it lies. We’re all best mates and want to keep doing what we’re doing. We had a great time touring the world and doing what everyone in our positions would want to do, but there was always in the back of your mind: keep writing songs, get in the studio, and be on the front foot with it.”

Diplo feat. Lil Yachty & Santigold – Worry No More

"Me and Calvin Harris hijacked EDM when it was good for us" - Diplo tells all to Annie Mac

Diplo debuts his new single Worry No More ft. Santigold & Lil Yachty on Annie Mac's show.

"I don't want to worry no more, I just want to ball like the big league, I just want a nice house on the shore, I just want a big house like Gatsby"

Diplo enlisted the help of Lil Yachty and Santigold for his latest record and it's safe to say that this particular trifecta of talent have created a hit. Taking to Twitter, Diplo explained that the song came about after a Lil Yachty show in Toronto: "He ordered pizza and freestyled this on a guitar loop... I decided to finish it and invited Santigold to help."

Does the most prolific DJ in the game ever intend on slowing down? Unlikely. "I just don't want to miss opportunities," he told Annie Mac. "I think that I’m just trying to push it as far as I can right now."

Khalid & Normani - Love Lies

It was only last week that Khalid paid the Live Lounge a visit, serenading us with a beautiful cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car, and now we're hurriedly hitting repeat on new music from the singer-songwriter.

Khalid teamed up with Fifth Harmony'sNormani on No Lies but this isn't the first time the two have worked together - Khalid called on Normani back in 2017 to feature in the music video for Young Dumb & Broke.

“Me and Normani are like this [crosses fingers]. So I was just texting her, out of nowhere, super last minute. I’m like, ’Do you wanna come to the video shoot?’ and she’s like, ’Yeah, on my way.’ I’m just thankful that she’s in the video because I’m pretty sure it’s not the first thing that we’re going to be in together. I would love to [collaborate]. The chemistry is there, so definitely the song or the piece or whatever would be great.”

Fast forward a year and we've finally got the collab we were after. Worth the wait? Absolutely.

Noah Cyrus feat. MØ – We Are…

At this point we think you'd be hard-pressed to find a member of the Cyrus clan who isn't musically gifted.

Despite being the youngest Cyrus of the bunch, Noah has been busy making music for a couple of years now. Her debut came in the form of the 2016 ballad, Make Me Cry, and she subsequently featured on tracks by Marshmello, Matoma and Alan Walker, before bagging the job of Katy Perry's opening act on her Witness tour. Not bad, huh?

We Are features and is the first released track from Noah's debut album, NC-17.

Virtual Self - Ghost Voices

WARNING: Contains flashing images. Third party video may contain adverts.

Porter Robinson is a big deal on the electro music scene and now too is his alias, Virtual Self (he's also got a record label of the same name). Conceived back in 2017, Robinson's Virtual Self persona blends speedcore, house, hard trance, garage and electro to bring a fresh new sound to the forefront of the electro world. Enter: Ghost Voices.

Still not convinced you should be listening to this on repeat? Calvin Harris has credited Robinson with reigniting his love for EDM and hailed Ghost Voices an "absolute beast of a tune". Find out for yourself now...

Jon Hopkins – Emerald Rush

WARNING: Contains flashing images. Third party video may contain adverts.

It's been a whopping five years since we've had a studio album from Brit electro juggernaut Jon Hopkins, but if Emerald Rush is anything to go by, it'll be well worth the wait.

Chatting to Annie Mac, Jon elaborated on the creative process behind Emerald Rush: "I think I started it nearly two years ago. It just went through many, many phases. I was writing things and then just chucking them away; they either sounded too similar to what I’d done before or they weren't exciting me for some reason. And then one day I finally hit on a rhythm that drove it forward for me… I just took as much time as I wanted, really."

The outcome? Beautiful and, as Annie pointed out, somewhat emotional. Anything to say for yourself, Jon? "I obviously do want to make you cry on a deep level. Sorry about that."
