Lauren Laverne's 5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 25 August

Every day we play you a track that has just landed on our laps. And as soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist, and other times it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's selection. Just hit the link at the bottom to see the full Just Added playlist:

Mélanie De Biasio – Your Freedom Is The End Of Me
Having already headlined the Montreux Jazz Festival and supported Eels on tour, Mélanie bewitches us with this new bluesy trip-hop single. The album it’s taken from saw her hide away in her “cave”, allowing her to “create freely” despite being “very uncomfortable”. Who knew uncomfortable cave dwelling could sound so good.

William Patrick Corgan – Aeronaut
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman is returning with a new solo album and this track is the first lifted from it. Thanks to Rick Rubin’s production (Lana Del Ray, Run-DMC), it brings a shimmering sound to Corgan’s ever expanding catalogue, favouring lyrical piano lines and expansive strings over his usual penchant for guitar.

Benjamin Clementine – Jupiter
This quirky other-worldly offering from Clementine sees the Mercury Prize winner exploring ideas of identity, both personal and universal. Inspired by a US visa that labelled him an ‘alien’, he says it’s “a poke at people being called aliens, like we’re from another planet”. You can catch the acclaimed pianist on tour from November.

Tricky feat. Mina Rose – Running Wild
Iconic producer and frequent collaborator Tricky is back with the atmospheric and textured Running Wild, this time featuring new singer Mina Rose from London. Improvising the lyrics herself, Rose says “the song comes from a place of confusion and yearning to return to the blissful ignorance of a child”. The vocalist will join Tricky on the soon-to-be announced tour for his forthcoming album ununiform.

Wu Tang Clan feat. Redman – People Say
This is the first musical offering from Wu-Tang: The Saga Continues, the legendary rap group’s follow up to 2014’s A Better Tomorrow. With creative production in the hands of long-time collaborator DJ Mathematics, and executively produced by RZA, it’s a track full of quintessential Wu-Tang grittiness and hard-hitting beats.
