7 of the most iconic Super Bowl Halftime Show moments ever

With just over two weeks to go until Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, Mother Monster has been sharing snaps of her rehearsals on Instagram – but don’t be fooled into thinking she’s just getting started. “I’ve been planning this since I was four, so I know exactly what I’m going to do,” says Gaga.

While we wait with bated breath to see what Lady G’s going to pull out of the bag on 5 February, we’re looking back at the most iconic Super Bowl performances of all time, to see what she has to live up to.

Releasing her first single in two years, Formation, just one day before joining Coldplay, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson on stage for the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Beyoncé was sure to steal the show.

As if it wasn’t enough to have Queen Bey perform solo at the 2013 Halftime Show, the world collectively lost it when old Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams popped up from beneath the stage to sing their hits, Bootylicious and Independent Women.

Nine songs, appearances from Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz, and yet it was Katy Perry’s backing dancer in a shark costume who everyone was talking about for days after the 2015 Halftime Show. It seems that being out of sync can really take you places.

Did things go viral in 2004? We’re not sure, but Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction was all over the news, when Justin Timberlake ripped the top of her catsuit during their rendition of Rock Your Body. They really overshadowed Nelly’s performance of Hot In Herre, great as that was.

It will always be remembered as the year M.I.A. flashed her middle finger and faced a hefty fine from the NFL, but bird flipping aside, the ladies’ performance of Madonna’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ was nothing short of iconic.

As if performing Armageddon soundtrack fave I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing wasn’t enough, Aerosmith then invited pop’s finest on stage for a version of Walk This Way, and we spent the whole time watching every interaction between golden couple Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Still not over that break-up.

The aqua suit, the orange shirt, the purple guitar: everything about Prince’s 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show was fabulous, except the weather. However, rather than letting a little rainstorm throw him off, he put on one of the best Halftime shows ever – and his lighting really did make for Purple Rain.
