David Ben-Gurion When the state of Israel was created in 1948, the politically experienced Ben-Gurion was the clear choice for prime minister. He served two terms in the office, from 1948 to 1953 and from 1955 to 1963, and was responsible for overseeing the creation of many of the new state's political and social institutions. During his period out of office Ben-Gurion had announced his intention of settling on a kibbutz and, after his retirement from politics at the age of eighty four, he finally took the opportunity to do so. He died there three years later.
