Sir Joseph Bazalgette In 1858 Parliament passed an act which enabled Bazalgette to begin his work. In 1865 the system was officially opened by the Prince of Wales although it was not finally completed until ten years later. By this time the network consisted of nearly 1,300 miles of sewers criss-crossing the city. They remain at the core of today's system. Bazalgette also designed several of the bridges across the Thames, including Battersea Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge. The construction of the Victoria and Chelsea Embankments was also part of his grand scheme for the improvement of London.
