Lesson 3
Sir Joseph Bazalgette

One of the greatest feats of Victorian engineering runs beneath the streets of London and it was the work of Sir Joseph Bazalgette.

He was appointed Chief Engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1856. Almost immediately Bazalgette set about the construction of a vast new drainage system for the capital.

At the time London's methods of disposing of its waste were astonishingly primitive.

The Thames was little more than an open sewer, hazardous to health, and the city was subject to regular outbreaks of cholera and other water-borne diseases which killed thousands.
