Lesson 2
Nancy Astor

Outspoken on social issues, particularly those affecting women and the family, she was also a firm believer in the evils of the demon alcohol.

Her maiden speech in the Commons warned about the perils of drinking and, in 1923, she introduced a bill that aimed to raise the age at which one could buy alcohol to eighteen.

During the 1930s she and her husband were strong advocates of peace with Germany at almost any price.

After war was declared, however, Nancy Astor became a stern critic of Chamberlain's conduct of it and she voted against the government in May 1940, helping to bring Churchill to power.

She decided not to stand in the first post-war election in 1945 and spent the last two decades of her life out of the political limelight.
