World of Work in Northern Ireland

The Big Picture

Agriculture

This is one of Northern Ireland’s most important industries although for many years there has been a decline in the amount of people employed here.

Advances in farming technology had meant fewer people are required, however the range of jobs in the sector has consequently increased.

The type of work available here does not only involve traditional farming, but vets, accountants, technicians, mechanics and scientists.

The agriculture sector interacts with the food processing and food production sector in Northern Ireland providing a range of local produce, and consequently with retail and even tourism and hospitality.

In the following clips from BBC Newsline, the challenges facing the agriculture sector in Northern Ireland are explored as well the opportunities for job development in a global financial downturn.
