United manager Ruben Amorim has been sacked

Manchester United have sacked their manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months in the job.
He was given the role in November 2024, and was in position when Man U reached the Uefa Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
Ruben Amorim has been expressing frustration with Manchester United management for a number of weeks now but had said he would stay until the end of his 18 month contract.
The Red Devils are currently sixth place in the Premier League, and the club said in a statement that the change of leadership would "give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish".

Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder, will now step in as interim manager, so will be in charge until a permanent replacement is hired.
He will be in place when Manchester United take on Burnley on Wednesday.

Manchester United's full statement
Manchester United posted the following statement on their website on Monday 5 January:
"Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United.
"Ruben was appointed in November, 2024 and led the team to a Uefa Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
"Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

Who is Ruben Amorim?
Ruben Amorim was the manager of Portuguese champions Sporting from 2020 until his appointment as United manager in 2024.
He helped Sporting win their first league title in 19 years and guided them to victory in two league cup finals.
The 39-year-old is a former midfielder, who mainly played club football in Portugal.
He also won 14 caps for his country.
As Manchester United manager, the team has had 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 losses.
Last season United finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish since they were relegated in 1973-74.

In a press conference on Sunday after United's 1-1 draw against Leeds, Ruben Amorim mentioned other Premier League bosses and suggested they would not be treated the way he has been at his club:
"I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it's not [Antonio] Conte, it's not [Jose] Mourinho, but I'm the manager of Manchester United.
"And it's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change.
"I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me."
