York's Barbican Centre closed in 2004
The City of York Council has announced its preferred bidder to manage the Barbican Centre.
The authority said SMG Europe Limited had been recommended as the favoured company to run the planned entertainment and conference venue.
The council's executive will be asked to approve the firm as the preferred bidder on 21 September.
As part of its submission, SMG said it hoped to reopen the Barbican, which closed in 2004, by April 2011.
SMG plans to invest more than £2m in the facility, which will host music, comedy, dance and community events.
The council said it could attract about 245,000 visitors each year.
