Tax chief Lin Homer's advice on child benefit deadline day

The Chief Executive of Revenue and Customs, Lin Homer, has said it is not too late for parents who get child benefit to register for self-assessment.

New rules introduced by the government require households with at least one high earner to pay tax on child benefit, or face potentially big fines.

Families where one parent has a taxable income of more than £50,000 are affected.

The deadline to register is 4 October. Lin Homer says it is better to make a registration than to risk being fined.
