Radio Drama

Radio Drama in Manchester produces a wide range of award winning plays, readings and poetry programmes, for Radio Three, Four and BBC 7, covering everything from Shakespeare to Benjamin Zephaniah.

Working mainly with writers and actors based in the North, Radio Drama taps into the rich vein of talent in this part of the country.

Recent productions include an adaptation of the French classic L'Assommoir by Diana Griffiths, using a range of accents and voices from the region, a drama documentary marking the Bhopal chemical disaster, a new version of the restoration comedy The Provoked Wife, adapted by Jim Poyser, a dramatisation of William Golding's The Spire by Gary Brown and Lorna Doone, a series which has been adapted by Jane Rogers.

More than anything else, the Radio Drama unit has a reputation for making strong contemporary drama with new writers from the area and are adept in finding new talent to work with. Recently, we've produced a follow-up to The Railway Children by Martin Jameson and a play about young offenders by Amanda Dalton, as well as 100% Human a first play by Patricia Calder and 2005 Brain of Brighouse by Lloyd Peters.

Next year, we are hosting a European Broadcasting Union workshop in Manchester which will be run by Charlotte Richies and will bring together practitioners from all over Europe to discuss Radio Drama over one weekend.
