Summary

  1. A cheeky updatepublished at 14:50 GMT

Sam: Greg, you've done, what, three of these missions now, three of these massive challenges. How does this morning compare to the first day of each of those so far?

Greg: I actually already think this is harder. Genuinely. But that's why I wanted to do it, because it's a real proper challenge, and it is already very hard. But I'm looking at my little distance thing here, and it says we're just about to hit 80 kilometers from today. So... that's good! It also says that I've burnt 3500 calories.

Danni: I know you've done it before, but Greg, just think of your bum after this, it's gonna be lovely!

    Sam: Oh yeah, juicy!

Greg: Well, it doesn't feel lovely at the minute. I've got to say it feels quite painful. But you know, that's part of it. I'm not gonna moan because we're doing a fun thing... sort of...

Danni: Don't forget, you can donate to Greg's sore bum!

Ahem.... Details on how to donate can be found at bbc.co.uk/greg.

  2. More support from listeners!published at 14:37 GMT

Hi, Greg. I've just broken my daughter out of school so we can see you. We're waiting in Shepton Mallet. It's snowing and hailing and pretty miserable, but we're going to wait for you!

  3. Greg's update on splashgatepublished at 14:31 GMT

    Greg James
Live from Radio 1's Longest Ride

I just went down a lovely downhill, after about 45 minutes of uphill, and that was SO NICE.

Unfortunately for Scott who's riding with me, he's closest to the middle of the road, and there was a pothole on the other side, and a huge lorry went into the pothole, and the splash on Scott was unbelievable. He's kind of shielding me from it weirdly, the timing was perfect, I'm completely dry. But he - it was like taking a bullet for the president! ...And yes, I just described myself as the president.

  4. Listener Sam has servedpublished at 14:26 GMT

Sam and Danni have played a special Comic Relief edition of their game First Come First Served - asking the Radio 1 listeners to guess which of three past Radio 1 challenges happened first:

    • Jamie Laing's Ultra Marathon Man
    • Mollie King's Pedal Power
    • Arielle Free's Tour De Dance

And the answer was... Mollie King's Pedal Power! Sam in Cheltenham was the first to message in with the answer, so he got to choose a song to be played to motivate Greg. He picked pop punk classic 'Thnks Fr Th Mmrs' by Fall Out Boy.

Did you know the answer? If so you can test your knowledge of Radio 1's past Comic Relief challenges with this quiz from CBBC.

  5. Sam and Danni are enjoying the live streampublished at 14:14 GMT

Danni: We're watching Greg on the live stream and it's so funny to see how you get all the supporters coming out with their signs, everyone's being so lovely, but you can also see a few people driving past him and splashing him with water from the puddles! They just got absolutely drenched.

Sam: As if he needed anything else going on...

Danni: But a smile still on his face, he keeps pedaling!

  6. "The biggest of the dogs" joins Sam and Danni on Radio 1published at 14:09 GMT

Sam and Danni have been catching up with friends of their show to drum up support and donations for Greg. They called up GK Barry and asked her what she thinks of the challenge so far...

GK Barry: Could never be me, people know not to ask me to do that because they know I won't do it, but I'm very happy he's doing it, what a lovely man.

They're asking her to go through her phone book and get her mates to send over some words of encouragement. They've written her a text message to send to everyone in her contacts:

Hey queen or king. You know Greg James, the tall geezer from the Radio 1 Breakfast show? He's attempting to cycle 1000km for Comic Relief. Can I put your name down to donate? Also a voice note to make him laugh would be good x

    We'll see who replies...

  8. It's an uphill strugglepublished at 13:32 GMT

    Jeremiah Asiamah
    Radio 1 Presenter

Jeremiah Asiamah has been catching up with Sam and Danni on Radio 1.

He's going up inclines of over 11%, it's been raining, the chain fell off his bike as well. It's sounding great but it hasn't been too easy for him, I'm not going to lie to you!

Some of these hills, I've been thinking that's a tough hill for a car, let alone someone on a tandem bike - solo before listener Jen joined him as well! It's not easy whatsoever but he's doing his absolute best.

And also I have to give her flowers to listener Jen, she really helped Greg.

And all of the incredible Radio 1 listeners - the support has been unbelievable, seeing Greg go through all these different towns and seeing kids come out with their families and teachers, there are dogs, new born babies... It's been beautiful.

    Paul

Greg says: "Everyone is so silly! And that is... to be encouraged! I'm getting "good boys" down the radio, I'm getting "good boys" from people's cars. I'm getting people beeping and then going "Oh Greg, good boy!"

  12. Radio 1 Breakfast icon Owen the Eggman has been in touch...published at 12:55 GMT

    Quote Message

Greg, it's the Eggman Owen here. Just wanted to say you're doing an amazing thing. An inspiration to absolutely everybody. A role model to everybody, including me. And I hope you smash this challenge. And we're all rooting for you. Go, Greg, let's go!

    Owen The Eggman

Greg says: "Oh, I love Owen the Eggman. He shot to fame on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show because he smashed 10,000 eggs - by accident! He was delivering eggs and smashed 10,000 and he became Owen the Eggman. He's a legend. What a guy."

  13. Outfit of the daypublished at 12:43 GMT

Greg salutes on his tandem bike. He's wearing skin-tight, dark cycling gear.

Greg's invested in a series of cycling outfits, knowing he has 8 days of clothing to get through! When he chatted to Matt and Mollie at the starting line earlier today, they were very taken by this one...

    Matt: "You're in skin-tight lycra!"

Greg: "It’s very revealing isn’t it, it’s quite slinky."

Mollie: "Are you feeling good in it Greg?"

Greg: "I feel quite pinched, that's what I feel. I feel quite amphibious. I'm like a water creature."

Matt: "If the chafing's already begun I'm worried because there's about to be a lot more than that!"Mollie King would know this feeling very well, as she completed her own Comic Relief cycling challenge in 2024. She travelled 500km and raised £1.3m - read more about Radio 1's past challenges for Comic Relief here.

  14. "I'm soaked, I'm cold, but I'm still going!"published at 12:32 GMT

    Greg James
Live from Radio 1's Longest Ride

We were going up this mad hill, just across the border to Somerset, and I was singing along to Lorde's Green Light. Then a hail storm came out of nowhere. It's been quite dramatic, quite a little tasty storm we've just gone through. So I'm soaked, I'm cold, but I'm still going.

It's so nuts this, honestly. I feel like I'm in some sort of weird dream. I keep cycling through really nice towns and villages and all the schools are out being like "Hey, Greg!"

But I'm going and I've done 54 kilometres!"

  15. "It's getting very hilly"published at 12:15 GMT

Nat and Vicky have just revealed it's getting very hilly for Greg as he enters the Sherborne area - and he's running into hail!

A reminder you can watch Greg on our live video above, get the latest news here, and follow updates by listening to Radio 1.

  16. Jeremiah Asiamah fills us in on how Greg and Jen are getting onpublished at 12:12 GMT

    Jeremiah Asiamah
    Radio 1 Presenter

I tell you what, I wish the roads weren't that heavy when it comes to their incline because they're both struggling when it comes to the hills. But you know what? Listener Jen is representing the girlies and the Radio 1 listeners very well. You can see it when she's in her stride. She's giving her absolute all. They ride together, they struggle together, but most importantly, they shine together.

And I love that, because whenever they go through different parts of the roads that people are there, and Jen's like: Oh my days! There's loads of people here! And you forget, there are loads of people coming out of their schools with signs, with their dogs, with their kids, their families, just giving not only Greg, but also listener Jen on behalf of the Radio 1 listeners as well, all the support they need together. And it's so beautiful to see. Honestly, it's like the most magical thing you could ask for.

  17. Radio 1 presenters send love to Gregpublished at 11:58 GMT

  19. Greg's back on the roadpublished at 11:25 GMT

During his pit stop, we found out that Greg has burned 1500 Calories and is about 20 miles into his journey. He updated Nat and Vicky from his first pit-stop.

Greg: It's definitely not going to be easy this. It's very hilly, the bike is quite heavy. You've just got to do it. I'm genuinely shocked by the amount of people on the roadside... I'm genuinely blown away by the amount of people that are into this... I'm hearing a lot of "Good Bois!" which is making me laugh.

Radio 1 listener Jen won a competition to be the first person to join Greg on the tandem bike - he caught up with her before she jumped on the second seat.

Greg: Are you ready to pedal?

Jen: Yeah, I heard it's all pressure on you though because I don't have to steer or do the breaks or anything.

Greg: Yeah, you get to sort of joyride... I'd look left and right otherwise you're going to see my sweaty back. And there's some beautiful countryside around here!

Greg and Jen are pedaling away now - click 'Watch Live' at the top of the page to see their progress.
