Hare-wood we go!

Scott Moran drove to a storming 49.19 second run in his 3.5 litre Gould GR61X knocking a massive 0.65 seconds off the hill record at the British Hillclimb Championship meeting at Harewood Hillclimb near Leeds on Sunday 2 July 2006.

The Ludlow driver pushed the current British champion Martin Groves in his Gould GR55 in to the second fastest time of the day slot by 0.73 seconds. Third fastest time of the day went to Hereford driver Deryk Young in a 4 litre Gould.

Moran's win gave him a full score of 11 points in round 17 of the championship in which Groves failed to score after an uncharacteristic off at the first corner. Deryk Young secured second place, followed by Scott’s father Roger Moran.

However, Groves had the consolation of winning round 18 of the British Championship and breaking the over 2 litre class record with his 49.99 second class run. But Scott's second place left him leading the British Championship by 2 points from Groves.

In the modified production car class, Llangollen's Robert Kenrick knocked nearly a second off his own record in the 1,137cc Caterham Honda setting a time of 57.78. Whilst Matthew Harrison slashed 1.67 seconds off the over 2 litre sports libre class record leaving it at 52.98. In the under 1600cc race car class Phil Cooke took exactly one second off his own class record when he set a stunning 52.97 second time in his 1600cc Force PC and getting the car in to the Top 12 Run off. North Yorkshire drivers James Blackmore and race car constructor Steve Owen also set times under the existing record in their OMS race cars, Owen in only a 1300cc powered car.

The Ladies hill record was also broken by Sandra Tomlin in her 4 litre Pilbeam when she set a 54.32 second run, knocking over a second off the existing record held by Sarah Cordingley in her 1370cc OMS.

The next event at Harewood is on 6th August, when there will be classes for bikes as well as the usual car classes.
