Record breakers

The Jim Thomson Trophy meeting on Sunday 4 June 2006 was the fourth round of the Richard Alexander Harewood Hillclimb Championship.

Jon Waggitt from Boroughbridge set the fastest time of the day in his 2 litre Reynard Gould F3 race car on his last run stopping the clock at 53.68 seconds. Jon was determined to wrestle FTD from Dave Banner and as he exited Farmhouse bend the determination could be seen with plenty of steering correction. Second spot eventually went to Nottingham's Dave Banner just 0.8 seconds behind in the diminutive 1098cc OMS race car. Harrogate Airbus pilot, James Blackmore, took third place in his flying 1600cc OMS clocking the fastest time through the speed trap in the process.

Three records were broken at the event. Hexham driver Steven McDonald in his Morgan Plus 8 took 0.15 seconds off the Morgan class record set four years ago. Steve Foster in the 1360cc Peugeot 205 embarrassed a 23 strong class of mainly up to 2 litre cars, when he won the combined class and set a new under 1400cc class record. The six year old Reliant Scimitar class record had 4.5 seconds lopped off it by Ben Gough from Southam in his 3 litre supercharged Scimitar.

Whitley Bay's Mike Smith took his second class win in his 1700cc Sylva Striker, beating the usual class leader Harrogate's Bob Bellerby in a similar machine.

Andrew Henson was just 0.3 seconds off the class record in his Swift Formula Ford, following some great driving.
