Saturday 13 May 2006 Sandra Tomlin from Llantrisant set the fastest time of the day with a 59.34 second run at Harewood Speed Hillclimb in her 4 litre Pilbeam race car at Saturday’s Harewood meeting. Second place went to Jon Waggitt in the Reynard Gould F3 car, two tenths off the fastest time, with James Blackmore taking third, just a further 3 one hundredths of a second behind. Only six tenths of a second separated the top five drivers. A wet start greeted the 150 competitors, which adversely impacted the level of grip and hence the times. The track almost dried out for the second timed run, but rain put paid to any time improvements on the third run. Times were between two and four seconds adrift of the normal pace due to the tricky conditions. Fastest times of the day: Sandra Tomlin, Pilbeam MP72, 59.34 Jon Waggitt, Reynard Gould, 59.55 James Blackmore, OMS CF04, 59.58 Class wins: Nick Frost, Ferrari 348 GTC, 68.98 Pen Davies, Triumph GT6, 70.88 Morgan Parry, Caterham 7, 68.72 Steve Foster, Peugeot 205, 71.58 Russell Thorpe, Renault 5 GT, 69.47 Karl Jackson, Mitsubishi FQ340, 66.26 Robert Bellerby, Sylva Striker, 65.25 John Hoyle, Westfield SEiW, 64.18 Phil Short, Mini Cooper S, 67.78 Phil Nelson, Reynard 89FF, 65.68 David Spaul, Westfield SEi, 68.32 Graham Smith, Radical SR3, 62.13 Dave Banner, OMS 2000M, 59.87 James Blackmore, OMS CF04, 59.58 Sandra Tomlin, Pilbeam MP72, 59.34 Sunday 14 May 2006 The weather was not good on Sunday. The track started damp and greasy. By the first competitive run the track was drying, but was tricky in places. The rain put paid to any improvements after that. 2005 British Champion and Harewood Hill Record holder, Martin Groves snatched fastest time of the day by less than three tenths of a second in his 3.5 litre Gould GR55 race car. Groves put his marker down with a time of 51.77 seconds in the first competitive run. Former British champion Roger Moran took second place, just seven tenths ahead of son Scott in their shared Gould. Groves was just under 2 seconds shy of the hill record he set last year – very impressive for the conditions. In the first Top 12 Run-Off (round 7 of the British Championship) Scott Moran took his second maximum score of the year with his Gould GR61 in the wet conditions with a 62.67 second run. Martin Groves secured the second place just under a second adrift, with Roger Moran taking third place. In the second Top 12 Run-Off (round 8), Martin Groves stormed to a 1.8 second win, giving it all across the finish line to finish ahead of Roger Moran in second and Simon Durling in another Gould GR55 in third. his win was Groves' fifth of the season and pushed him in to top spot of the British Championship, one point ahead of Scott Moran and two ahead of Roger Moran. The surprise of the run-offs was BARC Yorkshire Chairman Tim Wilson, who managed to qualify his 1.4 litre OMS CF04 in both run-offs against much more powerful machines, scoring two points in the process. Young local driver Simon Green set the pace and won class C in his road going Westfield on road tyres! The others in that class must have wondered what hit them. Simon's time would also have secured him first place in his usual class 5. Kevin Dewaine had a superb first run in the Lotus Exige, setting a time that was just eight tenths off the class record. Other notable results were achieved by Dave Banner In the 1098cc OMS race car, Andy Geen in the Peugeot 205 GTi and Bob Bellerby in the Sylva Striker. All were around one and a half seconds off their class records, not bad considering the conditions. David Lanfranchi benefited from an early dry run and took his first class victory in the Formula Ford class. Not only was there some great racing, but the Yorkshire Centre had also laid on a classic car and bike show, a new car display, a racing truck, BBC filming and various other attractions to satisfy the high number of spectators.
