चला, बीबीसीच्या रेडियो 4 मधली एक क्लिप ऐकू. यात संशोधक स्मरणशक्तीबद्दल सांगतायत. लक्षात ठेवण्यासाठी यादी करणं हा एक सोपा उपाय झाला. पण अजून एखादा उपाय तुम्हाला कळला तर? चला, त्याबद्दलची एक युक्ती जाणून घेऊया.

The researchers basically show that you get people to draw objects, or draw lists of objects, and in comparison to where you just write down the list, drawing has this really powerful impact. One of the things that happens is by drawing these particular objects that it leads to this increased contextual representation of the object in one's mind.

So, apparently drawing a list of objects is the easiest way to remember them. He says drawing lists ‘has a really powerful impact’.

That’s correct!   आता सुरुवातीचा भाग पुन्हा ऐका. लिहीणं आणि चित्र काढणं यातला फरक कसा सांगितलाय?

‘In comparison to’ याचा वापर दोन गोष्टींची तुलना करताना किंवा त्यातला फरक दाखवताना होतो. So, Tom, in comparison to British food, I think Indian food is much better!

Ha! Good example. We could also use ‘as opposed to’. I could say ‘drawing has a powerful impact on memory, as opposed to just writing’.

Let’s continue. As opposed to writing, चित्र काढणं किंवा रेखाटन करणं का प्रभावी आहे याबद्दल यात काय म्हटलंय ते ऐका.
Drawing has this really powerful impact. Ah, so there's pictorial aspects, there's verbal aspects, there's many different codes which the authors talk about which lead to this increased representation. It makes a lot of intuitive sense, the idea that if you have encoded something in a greater level of detail, it's likely you are more likely to remember it.

So, he mentions that drawing provides us with a greater level of detail, which leads to increased representation of objects.

‘Representation’ म्हणजे प्रतिनीधीत्व. पण इथे याचा अर्थ घेतलाय, ती वस्तू अधिक चांगल्या रीतीने लक्षात राहते किंवा मनात ठसते.

He repeated the word ‘aspects’.He said ‘pictorial aspects’ and ‘verbal aspects’.

‘Aspects’ म्हणजे दृष्टीकोन किंवा पैलू. ‘Pictorial’ म्हणजे चित्रात्मक. ‘Verbal’ म्हणजे शाब्दिक.

So, by considering different aspects of an object, such as how it looks and the words we use to describe it, our brain is more engaged and more likely to remember details.

बरोबर आहे. या दोन्ही पैलूंना ‘codes’ म्हणजे संकेत म्हटलंय ज्यातून आपल्याला अर्थ जाणून घेण्यासा मदत होते. याचा शेवटचा भाग ऐकू परत. Code कशा प्रकारे वापरलंय?

यात म्हटलंय ‘encoded’. म्हणजे सांकेतिक, संकेतात रुपांतर केलेलं.‘Encode’ म्हणजे माहितीचं आपल्याला समजेल अशा प्रकारे रूपांतर करणे.

There’s another use, too! If you ‘encode’ a foreign language, it means that you know how to use it correctly.

आता परत एकदा शेवटचं ऐकू ... ‘it makes a lot of sense’? या वाक्याकडे जरा नीट लक्ष द्या, कुठले शब्द वापरलेत यात?

He said ‘it makes a lot of intuitive sense’. ‘Intuitive’ means based on feelings rather than facts. And I agree - it does feel as if drawing things could aid memorizing them.
