How do I borrow and lend things?

Listen to different people talking about borrowing and lending things – put these items in the order you hear them mentioned:

  • money
  • pen
  • book
  • clothes

ఈ ఎపిసోడ్‌లో అప్పు తీసుకోవడం, ఇవ్వడం గురించి తెలుసుకుందాం. ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో వీటికి వాడే పదాలు 'to borrow' అంటే అప్పు తీసుకోవడం, 'to lend' అంటే అప్పు ఇవ్వడం.  వీటిని వాక్యాల్లో ఎలా వాడాలో తెలుసుకుందాం.

Yes! Listen to these four examples – two use 'borrow' and two use 'lend'.

Did you hear the four things? They were a 'pen', 'clothes', a 'book' and '£5'.

Yes! ముందుగా అప్పు తీసుకోవడం 'to borrow' ని ఎలా వాడాలో చూద్దాం. అప్పు అడుగుతున్నప్పుడు నేను ‘I’ లేదా మేము ‘we’ అని వాడాలి. మళ్లీ విందాం. Borrow కు ముందు వెనుక ఏ పదాలొస్తున్నాయో గమనించండి.

So, as you'd expect, the subjects – 'I' and 'my sister and I' – go before the verb. And the things – 'your pen' and 'clothes' – go after.

ఈ రకమైన వాక్య నిర్మాణంలో ఎవరికోసం అప్పు అడుగుతున్నారో, ఎవరి దగ్గర అప్పు తీసుకుంటున్నారో  ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు. వాక్యంలో తెలిసిపోతుంది. మొదటి ఉదాహరణ లాగా. ఆ మొదటి వాక్యం గుర్తుందా? మళ్లీ విందాం.

అయితే ఎవరి కోసం అప్పు తీసుకుంటున్నారో, ఎవరి దగ్గర అప్పు తీసుకుంటున్నారో స్పష్టంగా చెప్పాలనుకుంటే వాక్య నిర్మాణం కాస్త మారుతుంది. అలాంటి వాక్యం ఇప్పుడు చూద్దాం. జాగ్రత్తగా వినండి.

ఎవరి దగ్గర నుంచి అప్పు తీసుకుంటున్నారో చెప్పడానికి ఒక చిన్న పదం వాడారు విన్నారా? Yes…from అన్నారు. From అని చెప్పి ఆ వ్యక్తి పేరు చెబితే వాళ్ల దగ్గరనుంచి తీసుకుంటున్నాము అని అర్థం.

OK, so let's quickly practise the pronunciation together. The important words are 'borrow' and the thing. Please repeat after me: 

‘Could I borrow your pen?’

‘My sister and I borrow clothes from our mother.’

Great! సరే ఇప్పుడు అప్పు ఇవ్వడం గురించి చూద్దాం. దీనికి సంబంధించిన వాక్యాలు మళ్లీ విందాం.

  • I forgot my wallet so Max lent me £5 for lunch.

So, అప్పు ఇవ్వడం గురించి చెప్తున్నప్పుడు వాక్యాల్లో కర్త, కర్మ – subject, object - అప్పు ఇస్తున్నవారు, తీసుకుంటున్నవారు ఇద్దరినీ స్పష్టంగా తెలియపరచాలి.

Yes, so 'I lend you a book' and 'Max lent me £5'. With 'lend' you have to say the person and the thing after the verb. Let's practise that together: 

‘Would you like me to lend you that book?’

‘Max lent me £5.’

Thanks, Sam. సరే కొంచం ప్రాక్టీస్ చేద్దామా? మీ ఫ్రెండ్ దగ్గరనుంచి మీరు ఫోన్ అప్పు తీసుకోవాలి. ఎలా అడుగుతారు? 'Can I…' అని మొదలుపెట్టండి.

Can I borrow your phone?

సౌమ్య 
Good! ఈసారి మీ ఫోన్ అప్పు ఇవ్వగలరా? అని అడగండి. ఇందాక అప్పు తీసుకోనా? అని అడిగారు. ఇప్పుడు అప్పు ఇవ్వగలరా? అని అడగాలి. ‘Lend’ అని వాడండి.

Can you lend me your phone? 

సౌమ్య 
Great! Now you can 'lend' and 'borrow' anything! 

Sam
Except money! You should never lend, or borrow, money.

1. What's the difference in meaning between 'borrow' and 'lend'? 

When we use 'borrow', it means that the subject of the sentence receives the item/ thing.

  • Can I borrow your pen? >  'I' is the subject, so 'I' receive 'your pen'.
  • Laura borrowed my favourite jumper. >' Laura' is the subject, so she receives 'my favourite jumper'.

When we use 'lend', it means that the subject of the sentence gives the item/ thing.

  • Can you lend me your pen? > 'You' is the subject, so 'you' give 'your pen'.
  • I lent Laura my favourite jumper. >' I' am the subject, so 'I' give 'my favourite jumper'.

2. What's the difference in how we use 'borrow' and 'lend' in a sentence?

After 'borrow', we only need to mention the item/ thing.

  • Can I borrow your pen? > 'your pen' is the object of the sentence.
  • Laura borrowed my favourite jumper. > 'my favourite jumper' is the object of the sentence. 

If you want to mention whom you are borrowing the item/ thing from, then you have to introduce them with 'from'.

  • Can I borrow your pen from you?
  • Laura borrowed my favourite jumper from me. 

After 'lend', we need two objects. We need to mention both the person and the item/ thing – in that order.

  • Can you lend meyour pen? > 'me' is the person and 'your pen' is the item/ thing. 
  • I lent Lauramy favourite jumper. >'Laura' is the person and 'my favourite jumper' is the item/ thing.
