ఈ ఎపిసోడ్‌లో రెండు విషయాలను ఎలా సరిపోల్చాలో తెలుసుకుందాం. ఇంట్లో తినడం – eating in, బయట తినడం – eating out గురించి ఇద్దరు వ్యక్తులు మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నారు. వాళ్ల సంభాషణ వింటూ ఇవాల్టి కార్యక్రమం మొదలుపెడదాం. మీకు పూర్తిగా అర్థం కా కపోయినా కంగారు పడకండి. నేను మీకు సహాయం చేస్తాను. వీళ్లల్లో ఎవరికి ఇంట్లో తినడం నచ్చుతుంది? ఎందుకు? 

I prefer eating in because it's healthier.

Eating in because it's cheaper! 

Eating out is better, but it's more expensive.

Ok, వీళ్లల్లో ఇద్దరికి ఇంట్లోనే తినడం ఇష్టం. అందుకు వాళ్లు చెప్పిన కారణాలను మీరు ఒప్పుకుంటారా? Sian, shall we look at the language we can use to compare two things? They all used comparative adjectives – తులనాత్మక విశేషణాలు – didn't they?

Yes, and there are some very simple rules to help you. So first let's look at adjectives with one syllable, like 'cheap'. 

సౌమ్య
'Cheap' అంటే చౌక. One syllable పదాలు అంటే ఉచ్చరణలో ఒకే vowel-అచ్చు వినిపించేవి. Two syllable words అంటే పలికేటప్పుడు ఆ పదంలో రెండు అచ్చులు వినిపిస్తాయన్నమాట. So, cheap అన్నప్పుడు దాంట్లో ఈ అని ఒకే ఒక అచ్చు వినిపిస్తోంది. కాబట్టి cheap is a one syllable word.  ఇలాంటి One syllable  పద విశేషణాలను పోలికలో వాడాలంటే ఏం చెయ్యాలో తెలుసా? ఆ విశేషణాలకు ఏ ప్రత్యయాన్ని తగిలించాలో గుర్తుందా? మళ్లీ విందాం.

Eating in because it's cheaper!

Ok so we add the letters 'e r' to a one-syllable adjective.  So 'cheap' becomes 'cheaper'.

అర్థమైందా? One syllable పద విశేషణాలకు ‘e r’ తగిలిస్తే చాలు. రెండు విషయాలను పోలుస్తున్నాం అని తెలిసిపోతుంది. 

Sian
So cold becomes 'colder', and short becomes 'shorter'.  Now let's look at 2 syllable adjectives that end with the letter 'y'. Like 'healthy'.

Yes! so healthy is ఆరోగ్యవంతమైన. వాడాలంటే ఎలా మార్చాలో గుర్తుందా? మరోసారి విందాం.

I prefer eating in because it's healthier.

So again we add 'er' but this time you have to check the spelling. 

సౌమ్య
ఇది కొంచం జాగ్రత్తగా గమనించాల్సిన విషయం. ఇలాంటి పదాలకు ‘y’ తీసేసి ‘ier’ తగిలించాలి. So healthier is spelled h-e-a-l-t-h-i-e-r. 

Sian
And we do this with other adjectives ending in 'y'. So pretty becomes 'prettier' – with 'i e r' at the end. Now, can you remember what happens with other adjectives that are longer than one syllable – for example 'expensive'? Let's listen again to check. 

It's more expensive.

సౌమ్య
So two syllables లేదా అంతకన్నా ఎక్కువ ఉన్న విశేషణాలకు, పదం మార్చకుండా, ముందు ‘more’ అని తగిలిస్తే చాలు.

Sian
So 'interesting' becomes 'more interesting' and 'difficult' becomes 'more difficult'. Easy right? But careful because there are some exceptions!

Ah yes 'exceptions'  అంటే మినహాయింపులు. ఉదాహరణకు ఇది ఎక్కువ బాగుంది అనడానికి ‘gooder’ అని చెప్పకూడదు. మరేం చెప్పాలి? మీకు గుర్తుందా? సరే, మరోసారి విందాం. 

Eating out is better.

So, if we want to say that something is 'more good' we say 'it's better'. And if we want to say that something is 'more bad', we use 'it's worse'. Let's practise those. Repeat after me: 

‘better’ 

‘worse’
