이번 시간에는 음식점에서 불만을 제기하는 법을 배워보겠습니다. 영국 사람들은 아주 ‘angry’ 화가 난 경우라도 불만을 제기 할 때 매우 ‘polite’ 정중합니다. 그럼 어떻게 불만을 제기하는 지 한번 들어볼까요?

Excuse me! I'd like to talk to the manager.
Waiter! I'd like to make a complaint.
I'm sorry, but could I have a moment?

Do you think they were polite ways to start complaining, James?

James
Yes, definitely. The first person said 'excuse me', which is very polite, and the third person said 'I'm sorry'.

‘Excuse me’는 ‘실례합니다’, ‘I’m sorry’는 ‘죄송합니다’라는 뜻입니다.

James
The people complaining also said ‘I’d like to’, which is a very polite way to say what you want.

Bolam
‘I’d like to’는 ‘~하고 싶다’라는 의미로 같은 뜻인 ‘I want to’ 보다 좀 더 정중한 표현입니다.

James

자, 사람들은 음식점에서 어떤 경우에 불만을 제기 할까요?

James
Lots of things! The food, the plates, the table, the bill or the service, for example.

Bolam.
'Plates' 접시, 'the bill' 계산서, 'the service' 서비스, 봉사.

James
Let's hear an example. What is the customer's problem?

손님이 왜 문제를 제기했을까요?

Could I have a new knife? This one’s dirty!

Bolam
손님의 ‘knife’ 칼이 더러웠습니다.

James
The customer asked a question using 'could'. ‘Could’ is a polite way to make a request.

Bolam
‘Could’는 무언가를 요구할 때 쓸 수 있는 정중한 표현입니다. 몇 가지 예문을 들어볼게요.

I’m sorry, but could I have a moment?
Could I speak to the manager?
Could I have a new knife? This one’s dirty!

이 손님은 정중하게 질문을 한 다음, 문제가 무엇인지 이야기했습니다. 다른 예문도 들어볼게요. 이 손님의 문제는 무엇일까요?

Could I speak with the manager? I ordered two coffees, but the bill says I ordered three!

James
Oh dear! The customer had a problem with their bill. They were overcharged.

‘Overcharged’는 ‘과다 청구된’이라는 의미입니다. 그럼 마지막 예문을 들어보겠습니다.

Could you cook my steak more? It's too pink in the middle.

자, 대화 전체를 한번 들어보겠습니다. Waiter! I'd like to make a complaint.

I'm sorry, what seems to be the problem?

Bolam
There's a hair in my soup! Could you get me another?

James
Certainly, I'm very sorry! I'll get that for you right away.

Bolam
자, 이제 연습을 해볼게요. 종업원에게 새 ‘fork’ 포크를 가져다 달라고 정중하게 요청한 뒤, 포크가 ‘dirty’ 더러워서 그렇다고 설명을 해보세요. Remember to use 'could' and say 'please'.

Could I have a new fork, please? This fork is dirty!

잘 하셨어요! 문제가 심각한 경우, 종업원이나 관리인이 ‘compensation’ 보상을 해주기도 합니다.

I'm terribly sorry, I'll comp you a free dessert.

‘To comp’ 는 무상으로 제공하다, ‘dessert’는 후식이란 뜻입니다.

My apologies! I'll fix the problem and give you a voucher for your next visit.

‘A voucher’는 상품권입니다.
