ความหมายและการใช้

การใช้คำว่า ‘will’ เป็นหนึ่งในวิธีพูดถึงอนาคตในภาษาอังกฤษ โดยมีความหมายดังต่อไปนี้:

 การคาดเดาที่ตั้งอยู่บนความเห็นหรือประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว

• Lucy won’t want to come to that restaurant – she hates fast food.
• Let’s go to the park together on Sunday – the children will enjoy playing together again.

การติดสินใจในเวลาสั้น ๆ

• Ooh, those doughnuts look so good – I think I’ll have one.
• What should I wear today? This one, or this one…ah, yes, I like this shirt. I’ll wear this one today.

คำขอและข้อเสนอ

• Hey, will you help me up, please?
• Yeah, here, I’ll give you hand.

• Will you take a look at these, please?
• Yes, I’ll have a look now.

การให้คำสัญญา

• I’m so sorry I forgot your birthday. I’ll never do it again.
• I will love you forever.

คำขู่หรือคำเตือน

• Don’t get too close, he will bite!
• Olaf, if you do that again, you will have to sleep outside!

พูดถึงความสามารถ

• And if you look at the top, you’ll see a couple of small windows.
• If you don’t water them regularly, they won’t grow.

หลักไวยากรณ์และการออกเสียง

‘Will’ เป็น ‘modal verb’ (กริยาช่วย) ดังนั้นไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนรูปตามประธาน

ในภาษาพูด ‘will’ มักจะถูกย่อ เช่น ‘I’ กับ ‘will’ ออกเสียงเป็น ‘I’ll’

‘will’ ใช้นำหน้ากริยาหลักได้ เช่น ‘go’

• I will go home straight after work.
  
  

เมื่อจะทำให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธ เราเติม ‘not’ ระหว่าง ‘will’ และกริยาหลัก

• I will not go home straight after work.
  
  

ในภาษาพูด ‘will’ และ ‘not’ มักจะออกเสียงเป็น ‘won’t’
