No! If something is safe as houses it means it’s very secure or stable.
It comes from the British belief that buying a house is one of the best investments you can make.

Ah! To make an investment means ਮਤਲਬ ਕੋਈ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਾ। So should I invest in London property?

Sam
You’d be lucky! It’s so difficult to buy houses here! Most people struggle to pay their rent.

ਓਹ ‘rent’ ਯਾਨੀ ਕਿਰਾਇਆ । ਇਹਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਵੀ। ਲੰਦਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਦੇ ਮਕਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਦਾ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Well, I won’t spoil the answer for our listeners but I will say that rental costs in London are ridiculous!

The thing is, there’s so much demand for rented property in London that landlords can afford to charge whatever they want!

Yes! Property ਮਤਲਬ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ and landlord ਯਾਨੀ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ। BBC Radio 4 ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ‘You and Yours’ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਈ ਗਈ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਸੁਣੋ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੰਦਨ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਘਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਰਾਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੱਟ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਹਨ।

In London, a growing number of people are saving money on their rent by living as caretakers in empty buildings. They call these people property guardians and there are 7000 of them in the UK now, most in the capital. But new research for York University for the London Assembly has found that property guardians are sometimes in substandard housing with very few rights. Rex Deuce is a property guardian in London.

Rex:
I became a property guardian because I’d been living in private renting for about 4 years in London and I was able to get cheaper space and a larger space as a guardian. I’ve lived in about 8 or 9 properties. I am currently living in a very run-down pub, I’m about to move out, in fact, in a week and a half. It’s full of holes. It leaks. When it snows outside it’s as cold inside as outside, so it’s probably the worst-condition building I’ve ever lived in.

And he’s still paying a high rent, too! What’s it like in your country? Are people happy to rent from landlords or do they aspire to own their own houses?

‘Aspire’ means ‘ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਤਪੱਰ ਜਾਂ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਹੋਣਾ’। ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ ਬਣਾਕੇ ਵੱਧ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਖ਼ਾਸਕਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ। ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਬਣੇ ਘਰ ਲਈ a caretaker, ਇੱਕ ਸਾਂਭ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਕੇ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਨ for cheap rent, though.

Well, I would say that life in London is great, but expensive. If you can’t rent cheaply, why not take care of someone else’s property for a while?

Tom
I think you’re missing the point here, Sam. These people having to pay to live in poor-quality accommodation. They are being exploited because the housing market in London is too crowded!

‘Exploited’ ਮਤਲਬ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੋਣਾ। Well, nobody is forcing them, I suppose.

Yes, the man in the interview agreed to live there. What’s exploitative about that?

Tom
It’s exploitative because the only option that this man has is to live in these awful, expensive and horrible houses.

Sam
Well, I think it sounds OK. It can’t be any more extortionate than what I’m paying already.

Extortionate ਮਤਲਬ ਹੱਦ ਤੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਕੀਮਤ ਮਤਲਬ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹਿੰਗਾ.

ਚਲੋ ਇਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਕੁਇਜ਼ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਬ ਵੀ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਜੁਆਬ ਹੈ ਕਰੀਬ 50%। ਔਸਤਨ ਕਿਰਾਏਦਾਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਦਾ 49% ਹਿੱਸਾ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

49% of your salary on rent! That’s ridiculous! I don’t think it’s fair that landlords are able to to extort all this money out of people just because they own a few houses! I think this is something that we need to do something about!

Sam
I think you need to calm down, Tom. There are lots of benefits to life in London, rent’s just something you have to put up with.

To put up with ਮਤਲਬ ਕੁਝ ਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਜਾਂ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਕਰ ਜਾਣਾ। Yes, you shouldn’t get so upset over anything you can’t control. People here put up with lots of things ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਪੈਟਰੋਲ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਤਾਂ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Well, I suppose your money is as ‘safe as houses’ if you’re a landlord. I still don’t think it’s fair that their high rent is something we have to put up with, though…
