I’m not sure how I feel about this… సరే, BBC Radio 4 లో వచ్చే You and Yours కార్యక్రమంలోని ఈ భాగాన్ని విందాం. A restaurant owner is discussing the impact of people who don’t show up for a meal. How have these no-shows, affected his business? అంటే సీట్లు రిజర్వ్ చేసుకున్నాక రెస్టారంట్‌కు వెళ్లకపోతే ఎలాంటి ప్రభావం ఉంటుందో వివరిస్తున్నారు. ఇక్కడ no-shows అంటే వెళ్లకపోవడం.

Presenter 
Damian Wawrzyniak runs the House of Feasts restaurant in the village of Eye Green near Peterborough. There’s little to no passing trade, so bookings are crucial. No-shows can be devastating.

Damian
I remember we had one weekend where probably, in total, over thirty-odd people didn’t show up. We tried to call, email, there was no answer, no response. We lost nearly two and a half, three thousand pounds on one weekend. And out of this I need to pay the electricity I need to pay the bills, I need to pay the staff, rent, business rates, blah blah blah, the list is endless!

Tom 
You see, Sian?! He lost three thousand pounds! No wonder restaurants are strapped for cash!

సౌమ్య 
To be strapped for cash అంటే డబ్బు కొరత ఏర్పడడం. మనదేశంలో ఆన్‌లైన్ బుకింగులు ఇంకా అంత విస్తరించలేదు. పెద్ద నగరాల్లో కొన్ని రెస్టారంట్లలో ఉన్నాయి. వాళ్లు కూడా మనం బుక్ చేసుకున్నాక ఒక అరగంటో, గంటో టైమిస్తారు. ఆ తరువాత మనం వెళ్లకపోతే బుకింగ్ కేన్సిల్ చేస్తారు. ఈ రకమైన పద్ధతి మనకి చాలా తక్కువ. కాబట్టి మనకిక్కడ రెస్టారంట్లలో ఇలాంటి డబ్బు ఇబ్బందులు ఉండవు. ఇక్కడ చాలామటుకు నేరుగా వెళ్లి భోజనం చేసే పద్ధతే ఉంటుంది…no shows ఎక్కువ ఉండవు.

Sian 
They can't be cash-strapped! They’re already expensive!

Tom 
If we don’t show up at the restaurant then the prices are going to increase! Restaurants need to compensate themselves for their lost earnings!

సౌమ్య 
Show up అంటే హాజరవడం. Compensate అంటే నష్టపరిహారం చెల్లించడం.  Oh no! I don’t want to compensate restaurants because other people are no-shows!

Sian 
Well, I don’t feel too bad, to be honest. I see what you mean about there being scope for abuse in the booking system – people often don’t show up for their tables. But there’s scope for abuse in the restaurant industry, too!

సౌమ్య
Why do you think there’s scope for abuse?  Scope for abuse అంటే దుర్వినియోగం చేసే ఆస్కారం ఉంది అని అర్థం.

Sian
Well, some restaurants don’t pay their staff well. Some overcharge tourists... They’re certainly not perfect! The man in the news shouldn’t complain – it’s the pot calling the kettle black!

సౌమ్య 
That’s appropriate for our restaurant episode! ‘The pot calling the kettle black’ అనేది ఒక సామెత. అంటే మన తప్పుల్ని ఎంచకుండా అలాంటి తప్పులే ఎదుటివాళ్లు చేసినప్పుడు ఎత్తిచూపడం. మన గురివింద గింజ సామెత లాగ.

Sian 
Exactly! And now some restaurants have started to name-and-shame their no-shows on social media! That’s not very friendly, either!

సౌమ్య 
Name-and-shame అంటే ఎవరైనా అనుచితంగా ప్రవర్తించినప్పుడు వాళ్ల తప్పులను, వాళ్ల పేర్లతో సహా బట్టబయలు చెయ్యడం.  సరే, ఇవాల్టి క్విజ్ కు జవాబు (b). అమెరికాలో 37% రెస్టారంట్స్ ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో టేబుల్ బుక్ చేసుకోవడానికి అనుమతిస్తాయి.

Tom 
Listen, It sounds to me like there’s a lack of trust between restaurants and their customers. In my opinion, most restaurants are perfectly honest and professional! And, speaking of which, are you going to come to dinner with us this evening?

సౌమ్య 
I’m not sure…I’ll tell you later. Or maybe I’ll just be a no-show.

Sian 
Hey! You can’t do that! How rude!
