Word stress rules
1) Most 2 syllable nouns and adjectives have stress on the first syllable
คำนามและคำคุณศัพท์ที่มีสองพยางค์ส่วนมากจะเน้นเสียงที่พยางค์แรก::
- taxi
- sandwich
- coffee
- garden
- clever
- yellow
Some exceptions to the rule แต่มีข้อยกเว้นเป็นบางคำ เช่น:
- police
- hotel
2) Most 2 syllable verbs have the stress on the second syllable:
คำกริยาสองพยางค์ส่วนมากจะเน้นเสียงพยางค์ที่สอง:
- reply
- relax
- enjoy
- decide
Some exceptions to the rule แต่มีข้อยกเว้นเป็นบางคำ เช่น:
- practise
3) Words ending in -sion, -tion and -ic normally have the stress on the syllable before the last syllable.
คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย -sion, -tion และ -ic ตามปกติแล้วจะเน้นเสียงพยางค์ก่อนสุดท้าย
- relaxation
- television
- dramatic
- athletic
4) For compound nouns – a noun made up of two or more existing words - the stress is on the first noun.

- bookshop
