Mariam

Hello again, I'm Mariam. In part 1 of our story I told you about how Dionysus – the God of Wine – rewarded King Midas with the gift of a golden touch. Now it's time to find out how he uses it…

King Midas is back in his palace and is initially delighted by his special gift. Everything he touches(B1 REPEAT) really does turn to gold. But he soon realises the foolishness of his choice. Even the food he wants to eat turns to gold. He becomes hungry and thirsty. His daughter, seeing how upset he is, throws her arms around him – it's a nice touch (C2) -but guess what – even she turns to gold too!

So Midas gets in touch(B1) with Dionysus and begs him to come to his rescue. Dionysus feels sorry for him and tells him to go to the river Pactolus and wash his hands. So Midas runs to the river and is amazed to see gold flowing from his hands.

When he returns home, everything Midas has touched has become normal again – his sense of touch (B2) has returned to normal. Midas hugs his daughter with happiness and decides to share his great wealth with the people. From now on, Midas becomes a better person, generous and grateful for everything in his life. His people lead a prosperous life and when he dies, they all mourn for their beloved king.

Well there's a lesson to learn there – be careful what you wish for! But if you're wishing for another story, then your wish will come true if you join me again soon at bbclearningenglish.com. Bye for now.

It’s touch and go if I will ever go to London. I’ve been dreaming it since my childhood and that’s why I’ve got an idea about how a day in the City could be. I often talk to my little daughter about my dream. So she also knows a touch about this issue. She is touched by my passion for English language and since she began learning English at school she is excited to have learned “Santa, Don’t Be Shy” song from British Council web site. Her sense of touch is very high and she would like to feel the touches of everything in London. Till our trip will become reality she gets in touch with London pictures from the web. When she tells me about what she learned she puts her arms around my neck and this is a nice touch to associate with English beauty!

Something that really touched me in my life. Time. Time hurts us. All of us. Since we were young, when an event or even a nice touch happens, we always get the sense of touch that this thing won’t end. We feel accustomed to it especially if it is a happy event. We get used to it easily but when it ends we feel touched.

Through time, we start to hate this thing in our life for instance, when we pass our bac exam, we go to study at the university. We meet friends, we study with them for years but when we finish our study, each one of us starts a new life far from his university friends and wewill betouch and go [BBC Learning English says: the phrase touch and go is for situations, not people, so use the pronoun it, not we here] whether we’ll meet one day together or not. When we get a new job the same thing happens, we again meet other people and we’ll feel touched because one day we will be separated.

Even in nice touch events, [BBC Learning English says: this would be better expressed as: 'Even when an event is a nice touch'] the same thing happens for example and as far as I’m concerned, during my pregnancy months, I felt that it was too long and it won’t end but it ended. It’s true that I have now a lovely baby but it really touched me because it was such a wonderful experience but it’s now as if it took few minutes.

That’s life, everything has an end whether good or bad. I hope we never lose the persons we love.
