Someone, nothing and anywhere are useful pronouns in English. As you probably know, there are lots of other similar pronouns, which can be confusing. So we help you learn the differences in this session!

Is there someone else...?

As we heard in 6 Minute Vocabulary the word else often goes with pronouns made with some, no, any, and every. But what difference does it make to the meaning?

Let's look at some examples:

Any...

Anyone else = a person other than the one or ones already known but not a specific person.

  • That was a good question Meg, thank you! Now does anyone else have a question for me?

Anywhere else = a place that isn’t the place already known or mentioned.

  • We’ve searched the living room. Have you tried looking anywhere else for your keys?

Anything else = a thing that has not already been mentioned.

  • Your luggage has been taken to room 306, sir. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Some...

Someone else = A different person to the one already known about or mentioned.

  • It wasn’t just me, someone else was in the room too. They must have broken the projector.

Somewhere else = A different place to the one already known about or mentioned.

  • Can we go somewhere else to eat tonight? I’d like to try a different place.

Something else = A different thing to those already mentioned or known. 

  • There was something else I was going to ask, but it’s just slipped my mind.

No...

No one else  = no other person

  • I promise you there is no one else. I love you and you alone.

Nowhere else = No place other than what has already been mentioned or is known.

  • There is nowhere else on Earth as beautiful as this.

Nothing else = Not one thing more than what has already been mentioned or known.

  • There was nothing else in the bag, only the torch. You must have forgotten the batteries.

Every...

Everyone else = all other people apart from those known or mentioned.

  • Everyone else had a good time at the party: why didn’t you?

Everywhere else = all other places apart from those known or mentioned.

  • I don’t like this restaurant but everywhere else was closed. It’s the only place open this late.

Everything else = all other things apart from those known or mentioned.

  • The rooms were a bit small but everything else was fine. I would certainly recommend it.
