Sam వాళ్ల కలీగ్ బెన్‌కు ఫోన్ చేస్తోంది. ఆఫీసులో చాలా ముఖ్యమైన మీటింగ్‌కి బెన్ లేట్ అయిపోతున్నారు. అందుకని Sam కి ఆందోళనగా ఉంది. బెన్ ఎక్కడున్నారో కనుక్కోవడానికి అతనికి ఫోన్ చేసింది. వాళ్ల సంభాషణ విందాం.

Sam
Where are you, Ben? 

Ben
I’m at the bus stop! 

సౌమ్య
అయ్యో బెన్ ఇంకా బస్ స్టాప్ లోనే ఉన్నారట.

Sam
Oh dear. While we wait, let’s talk about what ‘at’ means here. Ben said ‘I’m at the bus stop’. 

సౌమ్య
Yes! ‘At’ అనేది ఎప్పుడు వాడతామంటే మనం ఆ స్థలం లేదా ప్రదేశంలో ఉన్నప్పుడు. ఆ పాయింట్ దగ్గరకి చేరుకున్నాక ‘at’ వాడాలి. ఇక్కడ బెన్ బస్ స్టాప్ కు చేరుకున్నారు కాబట్టి ‘at the bus stop’ అన్నారు. మన గది తలుపు ఎవరైనా కొడుతున్నారనుకోండి. అప్పుడు ఏమనాలంటే...

Someone’s at the door! Ben, is that you? Let me call him again! 

Sam
Ben, where are you? 

Ben
I’m on the bus. 

సౌమ్య
Ok, బెన్ బస్ ఎక్కారట. So, కొన్ని రవాణా వాహనాలకు మనం ‘on’ వాడతాం. 

Sam
Yes, we use ‘on’ for bicycles, buses, trains, planes, ships… But, careful, because we use ‘in’ for cars and taxis.

సౌమ్య
ముఖ్యంగా అని ఎక్కడ వాడతామంటే భౌతికంగా ఉపరితలంతో టచ్‌లో ఉన్నప్పుడు. లేదా ఆ ఉపరితలం మనకి ఆసరాగా ఉన్నప్పుడు. For example, Sam, your cup of coffee is… 

Sam

It’s on the table.

And my feet are on the floor.

And we are on the 6th floor…and Ben is not… Let me call him again. 

Sam
Ben, you’re so late. Where are you? 

Ben
I’m in the office. But where is everyone? Where are you? 

Sam
Oh, Ben! Which building did you go to? 

సౌమ్య
Oh no! బెన్ ఏదో తప్పుదారిలో వెళ్లినట్టున్నారు. ఇంకేదో బిల్డింగ్‌కు వెళ్లిపోయారు. అతను ‘in the office’ అన్నారు. మనం ‘in’ అని ఎప్పుడు వాడతామంటే ‘లోపల’ అని అర్థం వచ్చేలా చెప్పినప్పుడు. మన చుట్టూ గోడలు ఉన్నప్పుడు.

Exactly! We are ‘in the studio’, ‘in a building’, Ben is ‘in the wrong office’, and my coffee is ‘in my cup’. ‘At’, ‘on’ and ‘in’ can be confusing words because we use them to talk about time, as well… 

సౌమ్య
Yes! కానీ ఇవాళ వ్యక్తులు ఎక్కడ ఉన్నారు లేదా వస్తువులు ఎక్కడ ఉన్నాయో చెప్పే ప్రక్రియలో వాటిని ఎలా వాడాలో నేర్చుకుంటున్నాం. For this reason, we use them with the verb ‘be’ after the subject. 

Sam
Now, the pronunciation isn’t difficult, but it’s still useful to practise. We usually put more importance on the words after ‘at’, ‘on’ and ‘in’. Like this – repeat after me: 

‘I’m at the bus stop’. 

‘I’m on the bus’. 

‘I’m in the office’. 

సౌమ్య

Did you say the same? Well done! మీ ఫ్రెండ్ మిమ్మల్ని కలవడానికి మీ అఫీసుకొచ్చారు. రిసెప్షన్ దగ్గరున్నారు. రెసెప్షనిస్ట్ మీకు ఫోన్ చేసి ఈ విషయాన్ని ఎలా చెప్పాలి?

సౌమ్య
‘Reception’ కు ముందు ‘the’ అని వాడకూడదు. గుర్తుపెట్టుకోండి.
