కథలు చెప్పడమంటే నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం. మీకూ ఇష్టమే కదా! అయితే ఇవాళ మనం ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో చిన్న చిన్న కథలు ఎలా చెప్పాలో తెలుసుకుందాం. Do you like stories, Tom?

Yeah! But only the ones that have happy endings!

Well, see what you think of this one. ఈ కథేంటంటే కొంతమంది కలిసి ఒక పెద్ద కొండెక్కారు. అక్కడ వాళ్లకి ఒక ఎలుగుబంటి కనిపించింది. తరువాతేమయ్యింది? విందాం.

We were walking up the mountain, when we saw a bear. Luckily, before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions. We followed her instructions. We looked at the bear and walked away slowly. As we were walking, the bear left and went into the woods. 

సౌమ్య 
వాళ్లు మెల్లిగా చప్పుడు చెయ్యకుండా పక్కకి నడిచి వెళిపోయారు. ఎగులు కూడా పొదల్లోకి వెళిపోయింది. వాళ్ల గైడ్ మంచి సూచనే ఇచ్చారు. సరే, ఈ చిట్టి కథలో భాష ఎలా ఉంది? వాక్యాల నిర్మాణం ఎలా ఉంది పరిశీలిద్దామా? మొదటి భాగం విందాం.

We were walking up the mountain, when we saw a bear.

The speaker walking was the action in progress. It was in progress when they saw the bear. They use the past continuous tense. 

సౌమ్య 
ఇక్కడ past continuous టెన్స్ వాడారు. ఇక్కడ ‘was/were’ + [క్రియ with ING] వాడి past continuous లో చెప్పొచ్చు. రెండు విషయాలు జరుగుతున్నాయనుకుందాం. ఒకటి అప్పుడు ఆ క్షణంలో జరుగుతుంటే, దాని వెనకాల బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్‌లో ఇంకొకటి జరుగుతుందనుకుందాం. వెనకాల జరుగుతున్న విషయం చెప్పడానికి past continuous tense వాడొచ్చు. అప్పుడు ఆ క్షణంలో జరుగుతున్న విషయం చెప్పడానికి past simple వాడొచ్చు. ఇక్కడ వాళ్లు ఎలుగుబంటిని చూసారు. ఎప్పుడు? నడుస్తున్నప్పుడు అంటే ఎలుగుని చూడడం ఆ క్షణంలో జరిగిన పని. దానికి past simple వాడతాం. అందుకని ‘we saw a bear’ అన్నారు. Background లో జరుగుతున్న పనేంటి? నడవడం. So దీనికి past continuous వాడుతూ we were walking అన్నారు. అర్థమైందా?

Let’s practice some past continuous. We don’t usually stress was or were. Repeat after me:

‘were’
‘were walking’
‘We were walking.’

‘looking’
‘was looking’
‘I was looking at him.’

Ok, తరువాత కూడా రెండు విషయాలను కలిపి ఒకే వాక్యంలో చెప్పారు. మళ్లీ విందాం.

Luckily before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions.

So, first, the guide gave the group instructions. Next, they started walking. The speaker says the guide ‘had given us instructions’. This sentence uses the past perfect tense. 

సౌమ్య 
ఇందాక మనం అప్పుడు ఆ క్షణంలో జరుగుతున్న విషయం, దాని వెనకాల జరుగుతున్న విషయం గురించి చెప్పుకున్నాం కదా! ఇప్పుడు గతంలో already జరిగిపోయాయి ఆ విషయాలు! అవి ఒకదాని తరువాత ఒకటి జరిగిన విషయాలు. వాటి గురించి చెప్పడానికి past perfect tense వాడొచ్చు. ఊast perfect లో had అని రావాలి. క్రియ past participle form లో వస్తుంది. ‘Had given’ వస్తుంది.

Notice that the speaker used the adverb ‘before’ to show what happened first. They said ‘before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions’. Had given is the past perfect tense. Let’s practise the pronunciation together. ‘Had’ is not usually stressed when we use the past perfect tense. So, repeat after me.

‘Had’
‘Had given’
‘She had given’
‘She had given us instructions.’

Nice. సరే, ఇప్పుడు నేర్చుకున్న విషయాలతో మీరెంత బాగా కథ చెప్తారో చూద్దాం . మీరు ఆఫీసుకి వెళుతుంటే దార్లో రోడ్డు మీద మీకొక 'envelope' కనిపించింది. ఈ విషయాన్ని ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో ఎలా చెప్తారు?

I was walking to work and I found an envelope on the floor. 

సౌమ్య 
Very good. ఆ 'envelope' ని మీరు తెరిచి చూసారు. అందులో డబ్బుంది. ఎవరో డబ్బు పెట్టి పారేసుకున్నారు. ఇదెలా చెప్తారు? రెండో వాక్యంలో had అని వాడాలి. గుర్తుంది కదా!

I opened the envelope and someone had put money in it.

సౌమ్య 
Nice.
