So what do you think it is that puts men off from coming into the profession in the first place?

Jamal
The thing about a lot of men is, yeah, a lot of them haven’t tapped into that side of their personality yet. But, I think that, what will draw people to the profession is if they had more knowledge about the profession. They will understand that, uhm, they will get to see the benefits that it will have having a balanced workforce… It breaks down the whole ‘you have to be macho to be a male’ thing, you know. Basically, we’re positive role-models for them, you know, and we show them a whole different side to this ‘being a male’ thing.

Wow, really interesting! I thought he made some really good points about what puts men off thinking about being a primary school teacher.

సౌమ్య
అవును, what ‘puts men off’ అంటే ‘in the first place’…మొట్టమొదటగా మగవాళ్ళు ఎందుకు ఈ ఉద్యోగం పట్ల మక్కువ చూపరు? ? వాళ్ళకు ఈ ఉద్యోగంలో విసుగు తెప్పించే లేదా చికాకు కలిగించే అంశం ఏది? అని జర్నలిస్ట్ అడిగిన ప్రశ్నకు అతను సరిగ్గా సమాధానం చెప్పాడు.

Wow, knowing that it involves working with children is enough to put me off!

You would never ‘consider it’? Considering అంటే పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకోవడం?

Absolutely not. I’d be terrible.

Sam
You’d be better than you think, Phil. You have sides of your personality that are more fun and playful and silly... You would just need to tap into them!

సౌమ్య
‘To tap into something’ అంటే తట్టి లేపడం. Yes, I’ve seen you tap into those sides of your personality here in the studio sometimes, Phil.

What about you, Sam? Were you ever drawn to being a primary school teacher?

సౌమ్య 
‘To draw someone to something’ అంటే ఒకరిని ఎందులోకైనా వచ్చేట్లు ఆకర్షించడం.

Sam
No, never. I think if we want to draw more people to primary school teaching – male or female – we need to have more respect for the profession.

సౌమ్య
మన దేశంలో ప్రైమరీ స్కూల్ టీచర్లంటే చాలా గౌరవంతో కూడిన ఉద్యోగం కదా! ఎక్కువమంది ఆ ఉద్యోగం వైపు మొగ్గు చూపుతారు. పిల్లలతో గడపడం చాలా సరదాగా ఉంటుంది. పైగా గౌరవప్రదమైన, ప్రేమతో కూడిన ఉద్యోగం అని చాలామంది అభిప్రాయం. May be some people don’t respect primary school teachers because the ‘perception’ is they spend all day playing with children? ‘Perception’ అంటే దృష్టి, అవగాహన.

But they do a lot more than that. Like the teacher was saying earlier - having more male primary school teachers would help break down these incorrect perceptions.

సౌమ్య
Maybe, yes. ‘To break something down’ అంటే ఏదైనా విచ్ఛిన్నం చెయ్యడం.

Sam
And some countries have obviously been successful in breaking these ideas down. I’m curious - what was the answer to the quiz you asked us earlier?

విన్నారు కదా! ఈ అంశం గురించి మీ అభిప్రాయం ఏమిటి? ప్రాథమిక పాఠశాలల్లో ఎక్కువమంది మగ టీచర్లు చేరేలా, వాళ్ళని ఆకర్షించే విధంగా స్కూళ్లు ప్రయత్నం చెయ్యాలని అనుకుంటున్నారా? మన దేశంలో మగవాళ్ళను ఈ ఉద్యోగంలో చేరకుండా నిరుత్సాహపరిచే అంశాలు ఉంటాయని మీరనుకుంటున్నారా?

సరే, ఈ వారం కార్యక్రమాలు ముగించేముందు, ఇవాళ మనం మాట్లాడుకున్న పదాలను మరోసారి చూద్దాం. అవన్నీ ‘phrasal verbs’ అంటే ఒకటి కన్నా ఎక్కువ పదాలతో కూడుకున్న క్రియాపదాలు. ‘to put someone off from doing something’ అంటే ఒకరికి ఒక పని మీద చికాకు కలిగించడం, ‘to tap into something’ తట్టి లేపడం, ‘to draw someone to’ ఒకరిని ఆకర్షించడం, and ‘to break something down’ దేన్నైనా విచ్ఛిన్నం చెయ్యడం.
