Phil
Hi! I’m Phil.
Tom
Um, so Phil, are you going to eat the rest of that sandwich?
Phil
Erm, no, you can have it if you want!
Tom
Great! Thanks!
Caalii
You know, in a lot of places it would be considered impolite to eat someone else’s leftover food! ‘Leftover’ jechuun hambaa jechuudha.
Tom
Why? There’s nothing wrong with eating leftovers.
Phil
Why don’t you just buy your own sandwich?
Tom
Because, Phil, there’s perfectly good food here and you’re just going to waste it!
Caalii

Wow! That’s a lot, whatever the answer!
Tom
Well, Phil, you were just about to throw away your leftover sandwich!
Caalii
‘Throw away’ jechuun gatuudha. Why throw it away when Tom could eat it? Odeeffannoon har’aa Raadiyoo BBC Wales irraa argameedha. Jeesan Mohammad, waa’ee aappii ismaartfoonii haaraa (smartphone app).
Jason
Now a new smartphone app has launched in Cardiff which basically allows you to share any spare food. You take a picture of your unwanted grub, you upload it to the app and people then can decide if they want it or not. But would you eat a stranger's leftovers? Our reporter Llinos Pritchard has been asking some of Radio Wales' listeners in Bangor.
Llinos
Would you yourself be prepared to share your leftover food with your neighbour?
Guest
Yeah definitely, if you know your neighbour, and you know where it's coming from.
Tom
So, you see Phil, you don’t need to throw away your leftovers!
Phil
Maybe. It just seems a bit unhygienic to me, to eat somebody else’s leftovers.
Caalii
‘Unhygienic’ jechuun hanqina-qulqullina kan qabu. But they said that the app shows you who made the food.
Phil
Well, that doesn’t mean it’s hygienic! I don’t know how my neighbours cook, so how can I trust their hygiene?
Tom
Oh Phil! My point is that food is a valuable resource that shouldn’t be wasted. I think we need to create a more sustainable way of eating.
Caalii
Right! ‘Sustainable’ jechuun waara’aa.
Phil
Well, I’m sure most people would agree that it’s unsustainable to produce more than we need. We do live in a throwaway society, though!
Tom
You know, I actually agree, Phil! And, a note for our listeners. The action, to throw away, can also be used as a describing word, and the describing word is pronounced ‘throwaway’. So the action is ‘to throw away’ and the describing word, ‘throwaway’.
Caalii
Thanks Tom! ‘Throwaway’ jechuun jecha ibsituu kan waan akka laayyootti gatamu tokko ittiin ibsamiidha. Finding ways to recycle throwaway food can definitely help sustain our eating habits! Which is exactly what the app is trying to do, right?!
Tom
Exactly! Having extra food is something that we can capitalise on!
Caalii
‘To capitalise’ jechuun xiyyeeffanna irratti kennuudha. Otuma waa’ee nyaata gatamu dubbannuu, deebiin gaafii har’aa kunooti. Akkaataa qo’annoon ibsutti, nyaata addunyaa keessaa %30ni ni gatama.
Tom
Wow, goodness! It’s so wasteful to squander a resource like that. That is so much food!
Caalii
‘To squander’ jechuun qisaasuu ykn balleessuudha. It’s definitely annoying when people squander
Phil
You know what else is annoying?
Tom
What?
Phil
People pretending that they’re capitalising on extra food, when really, they are just too mean to buy their own sandwich!
Tom
Oh Phil! I already told you, it’s called sustainable eating! If you’re not going to eat the sandwich, I’ll eat it.
Caalii
Ati maal jettaa? Nyaata gatamu deebinifnee hojiirra oolchuun nyaata dabalata ‘surplus’ ni qabaanna jettaa? Thanks for listening and see you next week for more English Together! Bye!
