I think it might be C. the elderly, because my grandfather falls asleep all the time. In fact, sometimes he even falls asleep at the dinner table!
Sam
I don’t know. Teenagers can stay in bed for days!
Caalii
We’ll give the answer later in the programme! Ammammoo, odeeffannoo waa’ee maaliif hiriba rafuun nubarbaachise jedhurratti jalqabaa kan NPR irratti dhihaate kana haacaqasnu.
News insert
The recommendation from the World Health Organisation is that adults should sleep 8 hours a night, but why? The answer lies in the results of recent studies, which show that there is a direct connection between how long we sleep and how long we live. Matthew Walker, from the Centre for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, says the less you sleep, the more at risk we are from heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more, confirming that short sleep predicts a shorter life.
Tom
Do you know, I never get 8 hours of sleep a night… I’m busy, I have other things to do apart from go to sleep.
Sam
Tom, the news story says that’s not good for you! If you’re sleep-deprived, you could have health problems.
Caalii
‘Sleep-deprived’ jechuun hirriba gahaa rafuu dhabuudha.
Tom
But isn’t everybody sleep-deprived these days? I mean, who really gets 8 hours of sleep a night? I know I don’t, for sure!
Sam
I do! I always make sure I get at least 7.5 hours a night.
Tom
How? You’re a really early riser!
Caalii
‘Early riser’ jechuun dursanii dammaqu. Yeah, Sam, you’re always at work so early.
Sam
I’ve always been an early riser, so I just make sure I go to bed early. And I never use my phone, or computer, or drink any coffee before I go to bed.
Tom
Mmh, that might be my problem. I always have a coffee after my dinner...and then I can’t sleep...and then I’m exhausted the next day.
Caalii
‘Exhausted’ jechuun bututtu/ mudhukuu. Coffee is not a good idea, Tom.
Sam
Yeah, you always look exhausted in the morning.
Tom
Thanks! That’s why I always need a coffee.
Sam
How many hours of sleep do you get, Tom?
Tom
Probably about 6 hours of sleep a night.
Caalii

Sam
So, how can we make sure you get more sleep, Tom?
Tom
Well, you don’t need to worry about me, because I always have a lie-in at the weekend.
Caalii
‘Have a lie-in’ jechuun ciisicharra turu/ siree keessa turu. But do you think it’s possible to ‘catch up’ qaqqabuu/ bira gahuu on sleep?
Sam
Yeah, I don’t think you can pay back the sleep you missed by having a lie-in.
Caalii
And you need to stop drinking coffee...
Tom
Ok, you two, have you finished? I’m exhausted just listening to you now! In fact, I think I need a coffee.
Caalii
It’s only because we care, Tom!

Meaning & Use
sleep-deprived (adjective)
If you are sleep-deprived it means that you are 'suffering from not enough sleep'. We use the verb 'to be'.
Doctors and nurses are often sleep-deprived because they work such long hours and often through the night.
The adjective sleep-deprived is made up of the words sleep, which is a noun here (but can also be a verb), and the adjective deprived. They are joined by a hyphen. Deprived comes from the verb to deprive, which means 'to prevent someone from having or using something'.
If the drought continues, it will deprive the farmers, their animals and their land of much-needed water.
You can also use the noun deprivation, which means 'the lack of something considered to be a necessity'.
He is suffering from serious sleep deprivation at the moment - he hasn't been to bed for two days!
exhausted (adjective)
Exhausted means 'very tired'.
She returned exhausted from a long day at work.
Because it describes an extreme feeling, it is not possible to make it stronger by using 'very', but we can use 'really' or 'absolutely'.
I just ran 5 miles for the first time in ages. I'm absolutely exhausted!
an early riser (noun phrase)
An early riser is 'a person who gets up early in the morning'.
I wish I could be an early riser, but I've never been a morning person. I envy people who can get up early without difficulty!
to have a lie-in (noun phrase)
To have a lie-in means 'to stay in bed after the normal time that we get up'.
I absolutely love having a lie-in on Sunday! It's my favourite thing about the weekend.
A lie-in is the noun, and to lie in (without the hyphen) is the verb.
James finds it difficult to lie in beyond 8:00 o'clock on his days off. He's too used to getting up early for work.
