नमस्कार मित्रांनो...English Expressions मध्ये तुमचं स्वागत. हा आहे तुम्हाला इंग्रजीतले नवनवीन वाक्प्रचार शिकवणारा शो.

आपण रस्त्याने चालत जात असतो, अचानक समोरुन एक गाडी येते आणि समोरच्या खांबाला धडकते, आपण अगदी दोन पावलांवर असतो, आपण म्हणतो, थोडक्यात वाचलो. यासाठी इंग्रजी वाक्प्रचार काय वापरतात माहिती आहे?

रॉब आणि फिफीचं बोलणं ऐकू. रॉबच्या चेहेऱ्यावर तिला जखम दिसतीये.

Feifei

Erm, Rob, are you OK? You've got some cuts on your face.

Rob

Oh well, yes, I've had a bit of a bad morning. 

Feifei             

I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?

Rob

I was cycling into the office and some idiot ran out in the road, right in front of me.

Tejali      

कशामुळे रॉबची सकाळ खराब त्याचा झाली? तो गेलेला सकाळी सायकल चालवत ऑफिसला येत होता, आणि कोणीतरी अचानक मध्ये आलं. काही अपघात झाला का? काय झालं बरं? चला ऐकू.

Feifei

Crikey – did you hit him?

Rob

No – but it was a close shave.

Feifei
A close shave? Did he have a razor?!

Rob

No Feifei – that would have hurt. This is an expression that describes a dangerous or unpleasant situation that has only just been avoided. It almost happened… but it didn't.

Feifei
Lucky for you! So you're saying you nearly had an accident but you didn't? 

Rob
Exactly.

Rob had ‘a close shave’. ‘Shave’ म्हणजे दाढी करणे,  तर ‘close’म्हणजे जवळून. A ‘close shave’चा शब्दशः अर्थ आहे अगदी सफाचट दाढी करणे. जेव्हा एखादी धोकादायक घटना अगदी थोडक्यात घडता घडता राहते आणि आपण वाचतो; होत्या नव्हत्यातला फरक अगदी केसभराचा असतो, तेव्हा आपण म्हणतो, ‘it was a close shave’. त्यातून थोडक्यात बचावल्यानंतरचा आनंद, सुटकेचा निश्वास या भावना यातून प्रतित होतात. जेव्हा हा वाक्प्रचार नाम म्हणून वापरला जातो तेव्हा तो आहे तसाच वापरतात, . A ‘close shave’. यासोबत क्रियापद म्हणून be आणि have वापरतात. एखाद्या परिस्थितीबद्दल बोलायचं असेल तर, ‘it was a close shave’, यात was हे be चं रूप आहे. आणि एखाद्या व्यक्तीबाबत सांगायचं असेल तर आपण have वापरतो ‘I had a close shave’.

आता आपण ही उदाहरणं ऐकू.

Examples
We had to run to catch the plane – it was a close shave but we just managed to get on.  Thank goodness we didn’t miss it!

I had a really close shave this morning! A car just missed me as I was crossing the road. He was going really fast and he only saw me at the last minute.

William had a close shave when he was riding his motorbike, and a deer jumped out into the road. He managed to avoid it and didn’t hit it but it was a very close shave.

So, a close shave describes a situation where you have a narrow escape from something bad. So you had a narrow escape this morning Rob?

Rob
I did. Why don't people look when they cross the road?! I could have ended up falling off my bike and being hit by a bus.

Feifei
But hold on Rob – if you didn't fall off your bike, why have you got those cuts on your face?

Rob

Oh… these! Well, I had a shave this morning and used a blunt razor.

Feifei

Ouch! So you really did have 'a close shave'!

Rob

Ha ha. You're as sharp as a razor Feifei! I mean intelligent or sharp-witted.

Feifei

Unlike your razor.
