नमस्कार मित्रांनो...English Expressions मध्ये तुमचं स्वागत. असा शो जिथे आपण शिकतो इंग्रजीतले नवनवीन वाक्प्रचार.
आजचा वाक्प्रचार आपल्याला थोडं आराम करायला, एक पाउल मागे घ्यायला शिकवणारा आहे. Take a back seat. चला रॉब आणि फिफी काय बोलत आहेत ते ऐकू... त्यातून आपल्याला याचा नक्की अर्थ कळेल.

Feifei, keep your eyes on the road! Look where you're going. 

Feifei        
OK, OK! Rob is making me drive around while we present today's programme. Rob, why exactly am I driving my car?

Well, I really wanted you to understand the phrase we're going to learn today. But I'm going to leave it all to you.

तर रॉब आणि फिफी, फिफिच्या गाडीमध्ये आहेत. फिफीवर त्याने सगळी जबाबदारी सोपवलीये; आणि आजचा वाक्प्रचार समजवून सांगण्याची सुद्धा. त्यासाठी त्याने वाक्प्रचार वापरला leave it all. सगळी जबाबदारी दुसऱ्यावर सोपवणे.   

Feifei           
So what are you going to do then?

Rob
Oh nothing. I'm just going to a take a back seat today. You carry on, I'll watch.

Feifei
Take a back seat? Hmmm – so you're going to let me take control – do all the work – while you sit there and watch?

Rob
Yes – look, I'm just sitting here – on the back seat.

Feifei
Oh I get it! 'To take a back seat' is an idiom that means to give up control and let someone else take responsibility. 

Rob         
That's it Feifei.

रॉब म्हणाला, ‘he is taking a back seat’. Back seat’ म्हणजे गाडीतली मागची सीट. गाडीमध्ये पुढच्या सीटवर बसलेल्या व्यक्तीकडे त्याच्याकडे गाडीचं नियंत्रण असतं, आणि गाडीची सगळी जबाबदारीसुद्धा. त्याला रस्त्यावर लक्ष ठेवायला लागतं, आजूबाजूच्या वाहनांवर लक्ष ठेवायला लागतं... याउलट मागच्या सीटवरची व्यक्ती अगदी आरामात असते. यावरूनच हा वाक्प्रचार आलाय ‘take a back seat’, म्हणजे एखाद्यावर आपल्या जबाबदाऱ्या सोपवून आपण निर्धास्त होणे. आणि एक लक्षात ठेवा, 'back seat’ नेहेमी एकवचनीच वापरतात. म्हणून नेहेमी म्हणायचं, a back seat. चला, यासंबंधीत काही उदाहरणं ऐकू.

Examples

Honey, I'm going to take a back seat this year and let you decide where we go on holiday. I always choose and I want you to be more involved in our decisions.

Now he's getting older he's decided to take a back seat in running the company and has handed things over to his son.

Mary was happy to take a back seat and let Jim run the meeting. It was his turn to be responsible for the team’s decision.

So, to take a backseat means to choose not to take control and let someone else be in charge. Rob, does this mean you're just being lazy?

Of course not, Feifei. It just means I'm letting you have a turn at being in charge – I trust you – although… What are you doing?

Feifei
Letting you take the back seat while I show you how to really drive!

Rob
Feifei! Watch out for that roundabout… and that traffic light… aren't you driving a bit fast?

Feifei
Rob – don't be such a back seat driver!

Rob
A what?

Feifei
A back seat driver, someone who offers unwanted advice, someone who tells the driver how to drive. But we'll leave that expression for another day!

Rob
OK OK – but you are going really fast – can I take the front seat now?

Feifei
Stay where you are!
