• I'd love to, but I'm meeting a friend then.
• I'd like to, but I'm really busy.
• Ah sorry, but I have to work.

Did you understand? Nobody said yes. Poor Phil! पण यात लोकांनी एकदम नकार दिला का? नाही. आजच्या भागात आपण हेच शिकणार आहोत...’नाही कसं म्हणायचं’? So, Sian, shall we look at the language we can use to say 'no' politely?

I’d like to, but I'm really busy!

No, I'm just joking! Of course!

Ha ha! Very funny Sian! पहिली मुलगी म्हणाली, 'I'd love to'.आता हे ऐकताना होकारार्थीच वाटतं, पण समजा आपल्याला नाही म्हणायचं असेल, नकार द्यायचा असेल तर 'I'd love to'चा वापर अनेकदा होतो.

• I'd love to, but I'm meeting a friend then.

So we often start by saying 'I'd love to, but…' or  'I'd like to, but…' and then we give a reason why we can't accept the invitation. So if you hear 'but' and a reason you know that the person is saying 'no'.

आता इथे आपल्या आवाजातल्या चढ उतारांवर नीट लक्ष द्यायला हवं, कारण नुसत्या आवाजावरूनही तुम्हाला हो म्हणायचंय की नाही हे समजतं.

You can also just say 'I'm sorry but ..'

So the first person said 'I'm meeting a friend' – it's very common to use the present continuous to give your reason.

For example you can say 'I'd love to, but I'm going to the cinema'.

इथे आपण, आपला प्लॅन नक्की असेल तर आपण चालू वर्तमान काळ वापरू शकतो, आणि जरी नक्की नसेल तर I'm busy then असं म्हणता येईल.

Sian
Yes, but that can seem rude so it's better to give a reason if you can. The last person used 'I have to' so if you have an obligation you can use this form to give your reason. Let's practise that. Repeat after me.

आता वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारे ‘नाही कसं म्हणायचं’ ते समजलंय तुम्हाला. आता सराव करूया.

Would you like to come to dinner tonight?

तुम्ही नाटकाला जाणार आहात, त्यामुळे तुम्हाला जमणार नाही. कसं उत्तर द्याल?  खरं तर तुम्हाला आवडेल जायला, पण जमणार नाही असं सांगायचं आहे.
