नमस्कार मित्रांनो...English Expressions मध्ये तुमचं स्वागत. हा आहे तुम्हाला इंग्रजीतले नवनवीन वाक्प्रचार शिकवणारा शो. आजचं English  Expressionआहे ‘things are looking up’. याचा शब्दश: अर्थ होतो आता गोष्टी नीट दिसायला लागल्यात. चला याचा अर्थ समजून घेऊ.

ख्रिस आणि हेलन बागेत गप्पा मारत आहेत. हेलन काय शोधतेय?

Chris
It's a nice day here in London, so I've come outside to meet Helen. Ah, there she is! Helen, how are you?

Helen
I'm… fine… thanks.

Chris
What are you doing? What are you looking at?

Helen
I'm looking up.

Chris
R-Right. But I can't see anything. 

Helen
Neither can I.

Chris
Have you seen an aeroplane or something?

Helen
Not sure…

काही लक्षात आलं का? हेलन आकाशात बघतेय! आणि म्हणून ख्रिस विचारतोय, तू an  aeroplane’ म्हणजे विमान शोधतीयेस का? हेलन आकाशात नक्की काय शोधतेय? चला पुढचं ऐकू.

Maybe a bird?

Helen
Well, apparently things are looking up.

Chris 
Things are looking up?

Helen
Yes, Rosie told me that the weather has been sunny for the last three days, so things are looking up. I thought I'd come and see for myself… But there's not much going on to be honest.

Chris
Ah, I think you've misunderstood. Rosie didn't mean there are things up in the sky.

Helen
Really? What do you mean?

आह!! हेलनचा थोडा गोंधळ झालाय. खरं तर रोझी लंडनमधल्या हवामानाबद्दल बोलतेय. ती म्हणाली, ‘things are looking up’. इथे ती हवामानाबद्दल बोलतेय, हवामान चांगलं होतंय, असं तिला म्हणायचं आहे. पण ‘things are looking up’ याचा अर्थ होतो की आता परिस्थिती सुधारत आहे. वेगवेळ्या परिस्थितीत हा वाक्प्रचार वापरता येतो. आपल्याला सकारात्मक वाटत असतं, परिस्थिती आशादायी वाटत असते, अशा वेळी याचा वापर करतात. शाळेत किंवा काम करताना आपल्या कामाचं चीज होत असतं, अपेक्षित निकाल हाती येत असतात, तेव्हा आपण म्हणतो ‘things are looking up’.यात things ऐवजी आपण दुसरे शब्द वापरू शकतो, उदा.‘business is looking up’.  आपण कशाबद्दल बोलतोय हे नक्की असेल तर यात, things ऐवजी सर्वनाम it वापरलं जातं.        

आता आपलं उदाहरणच बघू. समजा कोणी विचारलं, तुझा बिझनेस कसा चाललाय?  तुम्ही उत्तर देऊ शकता, ‘things are looking up’ किंवा ‘things are looking up’.

आता आणखी काही उदाहरणं ऐकू.

My wife and I both found great new jobs last month, so things are looking up.

Things are finally looking up now that he's recovered from his illness.

So when Rosie told me that things were looking up, she meant that the weather has been getting better at the moment.

Chris
Yes, she's suggesting that it looks like the weather in general is improving. So what do you think? Do you think the weather is getting better?

Helen
So far, yes, yesterday was really hot. I hope it lasts for the weekend… But if things get worse, would you say, 'things are looking down'?

Chris
Not really. Instead, you could say: ‘It's taken a turn for the worse’.

Helen
It's taken a turn for the worse. That's a useful phrase.

Chris
Oh no, but hang on… look at that black cloud in the sky. It looks like it might rain after all. That's typical English weather!

Helen
Oh great. Things really have taken a turn for the worse! Quick, let's get back to the office before it rains.
