The Sagrada Familia
Gaudi's 'masterwork'
Welcome to Session 4. This time, we're in the city of Barcelona in Spain – a place known for its food, culture and architecture. And one of the most famous buildings is the huge church called the Sagrada Familia, even though… it's not finished yet, over 100 years after they started building it!
In the listening exercise you'll find out more about the building. Then you'll answer some questions to practise all the language you've learned so far.
Sagalee kana dhaggeefadhuu shaakala kana xumuri

The Sagrada Familia is a symbol of Barcelona. The church attracts three million tourists a year and is considered to be the masterwork of the city's most famous architect, Antoni Gaudi.
It's a beautiful building, even though they haven't finished it yet…
Construction began in 1882. However, when Gaudi died in 1926 the building was only a quarter complete. Work continued, but was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War. The building is paid for by public donations so progress has been slow at times.
So, what's still left to do?
Well, they've now finished about two thirds of the project, including the Nativity Facade and the Passion Facade. Work began on the Glory Facade in 2002 but hasn’t finished yet.
Workers have already built 8 spires, but there are 10 more to go. They've just started construction of the central spire, which will be 170m tall. That will make Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world.
And if all goes to plan, the Sagrada Familia will be finished in 2026, almost 150 years after the first stone was laid and exactly 100 years after the death of its famous architect, Gaudi.
